    Mindfulness and Thoughtfulness
(Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) Altan, Servet; Lane, Jennie Farber
Teachers and researchers in education today are charged with helping learners resolve constantly changing global and regional issues. These issues do not have simple solutions and addressing them requires critical and creative ways of thinking. Essential to developing these thinking skills is to examine current dispositions and behaviors; to become more mindful of why we think the way we do and to become more thoughtful about actions we take. In Mindfulness and Thoughtfulness: Leading and Teaching with Habits of Mind in Research and Practice, practitioners and researchers in the field of education present learning theories, case studies, teaching techniques, and professional development strategies associated with these Habits of Mind. Readers will find teaching inventories, self-assessment tools, and reflection exercises to become mindful and thoughtful teachers and educational researchers.

    Gender-Based Exclusion in Turkish Schools
(Springer International Publishing, 2023) Acar, Melike
This chapter explores understandings of gender-based exclusionary practices in Turkish educational settings and illustrates the theme of the "everydayness" of such practices through empirical studies from Turkey. A social domain theory is introduced that explains how children and young people evaluate gender-based exclusionary attitudes and practices, and suggestions are made about how teachers and schools can help to challenge gender-based discrimination and stigmatisation. It is also argued that national education policy related to inclusion is too narrowly focused and its scope should be widened to include sexual minorities and gender-based discrimination and exclusion. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023. Sporcu Öz Şefkat Ölçeği-kısa Formu: Türkçeye Uyarlanması ve Psikometrik Özelliklerinin İncelenmesi
(Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Yaşar Doğu Spor Bilimleri Fakültesi, 2021) Tingaz, Emre Ozan; Atalay Özyeşil, Zümra; Atalay, Zümra
The objective of the present study was to create the short form of the Self-Compassion Scale-Athlete Version developed by Killham, Mosewich, Mack, Gunnell, and Ferguson (2018), to adapt it into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties. After the linguistic equivalence study, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and criterion-related validity were conducted. Cronbach's alpha coefficient and test-retest were used for reliability. As a result of the linguistic equivalence study, the agreement between the English and Turkish forms was good (ICC=.806). The factor analysis was conducted among 205 student-athletes (Meanage=22.70, SD=6.09, 62.9% male, 36.6% female, 0.5% nonbinary). EFA showed that the factor loads of the items were in the range of .582-.845, and the item-scale correlation values were in the range of .411-.633. Secondorder CFA supported one factor solution, corresponding to the two components. Goodness-of-fit indices were acceptable or good fit (RMSEA=.063, SRMR=.058, GFI=.933, AGFI=.902). The Self Compassion Scale-Athlete Version-Short Form (SCS-AV-SF) was positively correlated with Mindfulness Inventory for Sport and the SelfCompassion Scale. The SCS-AV-SF demonstrated reliable internal consistency (α=849). The intra-class correlation coefficient indicated excellent reliability for the measure at a two-week interval (ICC=.980). Overall, the present study suggests that the one factor and 12-item SCS-AV-SF is a valid and reliable instrument.

Hadi Oynayalım: Okul Öncesi Çocukların Otorite, Kural ve Kural İhlalini Oyun Bağlamında Değerlendirmeleri
(Kastamonu Üniversitesi, 2020) Kılıç, Özge; Özen, Ayşegül; Acar, Melike
Bu çalışmanın amacı Sosyal Alan Kuramını (Turiel, 1983) kullanarak okul öncesi dönemdeki çocukların iki farklı oyun bağlamında otorite, kural ve kural ihlaline yönelik değerlendirme ve gerekçelerini incelemektir. Bu amaçla, 3 farklı sosyoekonomik düzeydeki okul öncesi kurumuna devam etmekte olan 5 yaş grubundan toplam 37 (21 kız, 16 oğlan) çocukla yarı yapılandırılmış klinik görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları Sosyal Alan Kuramıyla yapılan diğer çalışmaların bulgularıyla tutarlı olup çocukların ahlaki alanla sosyal-geleneksel alanı farklı değerlendirdiklerini göstermiştir. Ahlaki alan içerisinde tanımladıkları basketbol oyununda rakibi geçmek için vurmak kuralını otoritenin kaldırmasını olumsuz değerlendirmişler ve kuralın yokluğunda bile vurmanın yanlışlığını “başkasına zarar vermeme” ilkesine dayandırarak gerekçelendirmişlerdir. Bulgular Sosyal Alan Kuramı bağlamında erken çocuklukta sosyal gelişim ve oyun ilişkisine değinilerek tartışılmıştır.

Witnessing Inter-Parental Physical Violence and Physical Dating Violence Perpetration: the Mediating Role of Attitudes Towards Physical Violence
    (ISA, 2018) Toplu-Demirtaş, Ezgi
Although studies on physical dating violence have mostly been carried out in individualistic, Western cultures, the prevalence rates of physical dating violence among college aged students have been unexpectedly high from the early studies in Turkey as well. The current study therefore investigated physical dating violence in a more collectivist, predominantly Muslim culture. Informed by the theory of social learning theory, it tested attitudes towards physical violence as a potential mechanism that might account for the association between witnessing inter-parental physical violence and physical dating violence perpetration. A sample of 804 dating college students (576 women, 224 men, and four missing) completed the Physical Assault subscale of the Conflict Tactics Scale-Revised, Violence subscale of the Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale- Revised, and Physical Assault subscale of the Conflict Tactics Scale Adult Recall Version. Among the current sample (Mage = 21.85; SDage = 2.03; min-maxage = 18-25), 32.1% and 20.5% of the college women and men, respectively, reported to have used physically violent behaviors towards their partners. Two separate mediation analyses performed via PROCESS (Version 2.041; Hayes, 2013) that uses bootstrapping (Preacher & Hayes, 2004) revealed that the indirect effects were both significant. Attitudes towards physical violence mediated the associations between (1) witnessing father to mother physical violence, b = .014, SE = .009, 95% CI = .0017; .0430 and (2) witnessing mother to father physical violence, b = .036, SE = .017, 95% CI = .0133; .0852 and physical dating violence perpetration. Findings are interpreted in light of physical dating violence research, with a focus on universal and culturally specific aspects

What Serves Best Kurdish Self-Interests in Turkey: an Analysis in Light of the American Experience of Becoming a Nation and the Role of Education
(Kalem Eğitim ve Sağlık Hizmetleri Vakfı, 2014) Özcan, Mustafa
The ending of the Cold War at the close of the 20th century became a turning point for the acceleration of racial, ethnic, and religious conflicts around the world, specifically in the Middle East. Within various countries, struggles have arisen, as diverse social groups demand political, cultural, and religious rights. Turkey is one of those countries. Representatives of the Kurds are demanding rights ranging from cultural recognition to political autonomy and independence. Some Kurdish groups are using terror to realize their goals. The tension stemming from this conflict isdeteriorating the social, political, and cultural life of the country. The anomaly is that the Kurds have coexisted with the rest of the nation for more than one thousand year and their commonalities are more ample than their differences. America is a nation of immigrants from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
