    Gender Differences in Cyber Dating Violence Among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Despite the growing body of research on cyber dating violence, a comprehensive understanding of gender differences in cyber-violent behaviors across developmental stages remains limited. The main purpose of this meta-analytic review was to estimate the direction and magnitude of gender differences in cyber dating violence perpetration and victimization by synthesizing results from various studies. The second purpose of this study was to examine the effect of potential moderators (i.e., continent, age, grade level, time frame, method of survey administration, the metric of the outcome, study design, publication status, and publication year) on these differences. Various databases were used to identify relevant studies, including PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, PsycINFO, ERIC, and ProQuest. Eighty-one individual studies with a total sample of 70,233 participants, ranging in age from 10 to 30 years (M = 18.94), were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the present study. Most studies were conducted in North America and Europe with the largest proportions from the United States and Spain. Results indicated that there were no statistically significant gender differences (women vs. men; girls vs. boys) in perpetration and victimization of cyber dating violence. Moderator analyses showed that grade level and sample age were statistically significant moderators of gender differences in cyber dating violence victimization. However, other moderators (continent, time frame, method of survey administration, the metric of the outcome, study design, publication status, and publication year) were not statistically significant. This study contributes to understanding gender differences in cyber-violent behaviors during adolescence and emerging adulthood and highlights the importance of some moderators when developing targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

    Determining the Effect of Video Information on the Dental Anxiety Levels of the Endodontic Patients: a Randomised Clinical Trial

    Objective The present study assessed the effectiveness of pretreatment education in the form of Visual Video Information (VVI) on the anxiety levels of patients during endodontic treatment steps. Methods Patients (n = 120) having single-rooted teeth with a single root canal diagnosed with asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis and/or pre-prosthetic root canal treatment were included in this study. After completing anxiety scales and a sociodemographic/dental habits survey, the patients were randomly divided into two groups. Just before the endodontic treatment, VVI was given to the video group patients, while the control group patients received routine information verbally. In both groups, a galvanic skin response (GSR) device was placed on the patients' wrists to record the stress levels during the endodontic treatment process. Anxiety scales and a feedback-satisfaction survey were administered to all patients after the treatment process. Then, statistical analysis was performed (alpha = 0.05). Results This study performed 60 endodontic treatments on 60 patients (30 females and 30 males). Sociodemographic characteristics and dental treatment habits of the patients significantly affected dental anxiety scale scores (p < 0.05). VVI resulted in a significant decrease in the mean scores of anxiety before and after the treatment, but this decrease was not significant between the groups (p > 0.05). Similarly, VVI did not impact the GSR readings between the groups during treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions The educational VVI is effective for reducing anxiety in patients undergoing endodontic treatment. In addition, the electrodermal activity method is a promising alternative for objectively assessing anxiety levels.

    Developmental Differences in Children and Adults' Enforcement of Explore Versus Exploit Search Strategies in the United States and Turkey

    Across development, as children acquire a deeper understanding of their environment, they explore less and take advantage, or "exploit," what they already know. Here, we test whether children also enforce exploration-oriented search behaviors onto others. Specifically, we ask whether children are more likely to encourage a search agent to explore versus exploit their environment, and whether this pattern varies across childhood (between 3 and 6 years). We also ask whether this pattern differs between children and adults, and generalizes across two different sociocultural contexts-Turkey and the United States-that differ on dimensions that might relate to children's decisions about exploration (e.g., curiosity-focused educational practices, attitudes toward uncertainty avoidance). Participants (N = 358) watched an agent search for rewards and were asked at various points whether the agent should "stay" (exploit) in their current location, or "go" (explore) to a new location. At all points in the experiment, children enforced exploration significantly more often than adults. Early in the agent's search, children in the US enforced exploration more often than children in Turkey; later in the search, younger children (from both sociocultural contexts) were more likely to continue enforcing exploration compared to older children. These findings highlight that children are not only highly exploratory themselves, but also enforce exploration onto others-underscoring the central role that exploration plays in driving early cognitive development across diverse sociocultural contexts.Research Highlights The current study examined developmental and cross-cultural differences in children and adults' enforcement of explore-exploit search strategies. Children in the US and Turkey enforced exploration more than adults, who enforced exploitation more often; results were generally consistent across cultures with small differences. Mirroring developmental changes in children's own search behavior; the tendency to enforce exploration decreased between 3- to 6-years of age. Findings underscore the central role of an "exploration mindset" in children's early decision-making-even when exploration has no direct benefits to the child themselves.

    Parenting Measurement, Normativeness, and Associations With Child Outcomes: Comparing Evidence From Four Non-Western Cultures

    This study compared parenting across four non-Western cultures to test cross-cultural commonality and specificity principles in three aspects: measurement properties, parenting normativeness, and their associations with child outcomes. Both mothers and fathers (N = 1509 dyads) with preschool-aged children (M = 5.00 years; 48% girls) from urban areas of four countries (Malaysia, N = 372; China, N = 441; Turkey, N = 402; and Japan, N = 294) reported on four parenting constructs (authoritative, authoritarian, group harmony socialization, and intrusive control) and their sub-dimensions using modified culturally relevant measures. Teachers reported on children's internalizing, externalizing, and prosocial behaviors. The commonality principle was supported by two sets of findings: (1) full measurement invariance was established for most parenting constructs and sub-dimensions, except that intrusive control only reached partial scalar invariance, and (2) no variations were found in associations between parenting and any child outcomes across cultures or parent gender at the construct level for all four parenting constructs and at the sub-dimensional level for authoritarian and intrusive control sub-dimensions. The specificity principle was supported by the other two sets of findings: (1) cross-cultural differences in parenting normativeness did not follow the pattern of economic development but yielded culture-specific patterns, and (2) at the sub-dimensional level, the authoritative parenting and group harmony socialization sub-dimensions were differently associated with child outcomes across cultures and/or parent gender. The findings suggested that examining specific dimensions rather than broad parenting constructs is necessary to reflect cultural specificities and nuances. Our study provided a culturally-invariant instrument and a three-step guide for future parenting research to examine cross-cultural commonalities/specificities. Research HighlightsThis is the first study to use an instrument with measurement invariance across multiple non-Western cultures to examine the commonality and specificity principles in parenting.Measurement invariance was achieved across cultures for authoritative and authoritarian parenting, group harmony socialization, intrusive control, and their sub-dimensions, supporting the commonality principle.Cross-cultural differences in parenting normativeness did not follow the pattern of economic development but yielded culture-specific patterns, supporting the specificity principle.Both commonalities and specificities were manifested in associations between parenting and child outcomes across cultures.

    Single-Slice Microwave Imaging of Breast Cancer by Reverse Time Migration

    Purpose Microwave imaging of breast cancer is considered and a new microwave imaging prototype including the imaging algorithm, the antenna array, and the measurement configuration is presented. The prototype aims to project the geometrical features of the anomalies inside the breast to a single-slice image at the coronal plane depending on the complex dielectric permittivity variation among the tissues to aid the diagnosis . Methods The imaging prototype uses a solid cylindrical dielectric platform, where a total of 24 optimized Vivaldi antennas are embedded inside to form a uniform circular antenna array. The center of the platform is carved to create a hollow part for placement of the breast and the multistatic, microwave scattering parameters are collected with the antenna array around the hollow center. The dielectric platform further enhances the microwave impedance matching against the breast fat tissue and preserves the vertical polarization during the measurements. In the imaging phase, a computationally efficient inverse electromagnetic scattering method-reverse time migration (RTM)-is considered and adapted in terms of scattering parameters to comply with the actual measurements. Results The prototype system is experimentally tested against tissue-mimicking breast phantoms with realistic dielectric permittivity profiles. The reconstructed single-slice images accurately determined the locations and the geometrical extents of the tumor phantoms. These experiments not only verified the microwave imaging prototype but also provided the first experimental results of the imaging algorithm. Conclusions The presented prototype system implementing the RTM method is capable of reconstructing single-slice, nonanatomical images, where the hotspots correspond to the geometrical projections of the anomalies inside the breast.

    What Goes Around Comes Around: the Loop of Physical Teen Dating Violence Perpetration Among Turkish Adolescents

    Compared to Western literature, little is known about teen dating violence perpetration (DVP) in Turkey. One risk factor of physical teen DVP may lie within teens' witnessing interparental physical violence perpetration and subsequent accepting attitudes toward physical partner violence as a risk factor. Informed by the intergenerational transmission (IGT) of violence theory, we investigated attitudes toward physical partner violence as a likely mechanism that might account for the association between witnessing interparental physical violence perpetration and physical teen DVP. In a sample of 242 Turkish teens, the prevalence of teen DVP was 32.0% for females and 28.4% for males, with no significant gender difference. The results of the moderated mediation analyses confirmed the hypothesized model for men only. IGT of violence theory offers good guidance in understanding the etiology of physical teen DVP. For prevention practices, accepting attitudes toward physical partner violence seems a hurdle that needs to be breached.

    Microwave Imaging of Breast Cancer With Factorization Method: Spions as Contrast Agent

    Female breast at macroscopic scale is a non-magnetic medium, which eliminates the possibility of realizing microwave imaging of the breast cancer based on magnetic permeability variations. However, by administering functionalized, superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPION) as a contrast material to modulate magnetic permeability of cancer cells, a small variation on the scattered electric field from the breast is achievable under an external, polarizing magnetic field. PURPOSE: We demonstrate an imaging technique that can locate cancerous tumors inside the breast due to electric field variations caused by SPION tracers under different magnetic field intensities. Furthermore, we assess the feasibility of SPION enhanced microwave imaging for breast cancer with simulations performed on a multi-static imaging configuration. METHODS: The imaging procedure is realized as the factorization method of qualitative inverse scattering theory, which is essentially a shape retrieval algorithm for inaccessible objects. The formulation is heuristically modified to accommodate the scattering parameters instead of the electric field to comply with the requirements of experimental microwave imaging systems. RESULTS:With full-wave electromagnetic simulations performed on an anthropomorphically realistic breast phantom, which is excited with a cylindrical imaging prototype of 18 dipole antenna arranged as a single row, the technique is able to locate cancerous tumors for a experimentally achievable doses. CONCLUSIONS: The technique generates non-anatomic microwave images, which maps the cancerous tumors depending on concentration of SPION tracers, to aid the diagnosis of the breast cancer.
