dc.description.abstract This paper discusses the output from the damage reconnaissance conducted after the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake. First, a large landslide occurred in a limestone gentle slope without much ground water. Second, the ground subsidence in the coastal area does not comply the the local soil conditions and other observed post-seismic situations. Third, the acceleration records exhibit stronger motion with longer period and shorter duration towards the western end of the causative fault and suggest supershear rupture. To understand these features of the ground motion, this paper proposes a hypothetical model that can reproduce these observations to a good extent. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

dc.description.sponsorship The work was supported by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research [19KK0121]. The authors express their sincere thanks to AFAD of Turkish Government that implemented a national network of earthquake observation and has released these records to the researchers. Thus, the researchers have obtained an invaluable opportunity in which the digital records of possibly supershear earthquake are studied. The generosity of this institute is deeply appreciated. Then, the special thanks are extended to Prof, T. Kiyota of University of Tokyo who had visited the damage sites two month earlier and supported the first author’s visit by supplying information and equipment. Dr. T. Hosoya of Chuo Kaihatsu Company in Tokyo assisted the examination of the local rock types. The authors believe that the results of their study help the development of technologies that can mitigate the damage due to the newly experienced supershear earthquake and other mysterious phenomena as addressed in this paper. Last but not least, it is noted that all the figures and photographs in this paper were drawn or taken by the first author with kind technical assistance by Prof. N. Yoshida and are owned by the IITT Image Bank in Tokyo that allowed the authors to use them without showing its credit in the titles.
dc.description.sponsorship The reconnaissance study described in this paper was conducted in June, 2023, with partial financial supports by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research 19KK0121 of the Japanese Government and the Chuo Kaihatsu Corporation in Tokyo, to which the authors are grateful. The authors have no conflict of interest to declare with them.
