Book Part A Comparative Study on How Academic Libraries Contribute to Sustainability(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026) Çimen, Ertuğrul; Cevher, Nilay; Gedik, Kübra Zayim; Bulgan, Uğur; Akbaytürk Çanak, Tuba; Sezgin, Üstün BerkSustainability, encompassing environmental, economic, and social dimensions, is central to creating a more inhabitable future, and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address multifaceted challenges, including information access and education inequalities. Libraries, particularly academic libraries, have a core mission to provide and disseminate sustainable information, positioning them as key contributors to achieving the SDGs. This comparative study investigates the diverse roles of academic libraries in advancing these goals across Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece, North Macedonia, and Türkiye, chosen for their regional proximity and similar socio-cultural and librarianship contexts. Drawing upon survey data, the study explores the involvement of academic libraries in sustainable development within these countries and the factors influencing their engagement. Despite a low response rate, the findings highlight a growing awareness among academic libraries and librarians toward sustainable development, revealing diverse strategies, successful approaches, and challenges encountered. Ultimately, the study underscores the vital role of academic libraries as catalysts for knowledge dissemination, community empowerment, and innovation in advancing the global sustainability agenda, offering valuable insights for policymakers and library stakeholdersconference-proceedings.listelement.badge A Success Story of an Academic Library Consortium: ANKOS(Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018)., 2018) Çimen, Ertuğrul; Çanak, Tuba Akbaytürk; Çuhadar, SamiANKOS has been very successful in linking academic institutions in Turkey to aneffective and efficient organisation of consortial activities. This is illustrated byfigures provided on its expansion over eighteen years. The paper takes a historicaland descriptive approach to the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium(ANKOS). It aims to describe the goals, fields of activity, organizational structure, functioning and the benefits it provides to Turkish academic libraries. . Theauthors believe that this paper is useful for all academic librarians concerned withconsortium systems, cost sharing, e-resource management, open access (OA),collaboration on national and international scales, and staff exchange, especiallyin the developing world.Conference Object Adapting public collections and libraries through 21st century strategies and solutions: Adapt, manage or perish(AI Magin Public Collections in the 21st Century in Light of Digital Development, 2024) Çimen, ErtuğrulThe presentation builds on three key pillars, focusing on the evolving role of librarians in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The first pillar emphasises the importance of identifying effective strategies for navigating this transformative period. These strategies include digital transformation, digitisation and accessibility, intelligent cataloguing and search, community engagement, and the integration of advanced technologies into library operations. The second pillar highlights the critical roles and tasks that librarians are expected to undertake in this context. These tasks encompass staff training to enhance digital and AI competencies, upgrading infrastructure to support technological advancements, and implementing outreach programmes to engage communities and promote digital literacy. Practical recommendations are also provided, such as advocating for increased financial support through grant applications and lobbying efforts. Privacy and security emerge as significant concerns, necessitating measures to protect patron data. 54 Abstracts Recommended actions include the development of transparent policies, implementing threat detection and prevention systems, utilising data encryption and anonymisation techniques, and ensuring robust access control and authentication mechanisms. Continuous data monitoring, reporting, automatic updates, and patch management further enhance security protocols. The presentation also stresses the need for user-centred design in library services. This involves incorporating feedback mechanisms and offering inclusive services tailored to diverse user needs, ensuring accessibility and relevance for all patrons. The third pillar explores the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and its contributions to the intersection of AI and libraries. Key initiatives include the work of the Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Working Group, which addresses topics such as AI ethics and provides valuable publications and reports to guide libraries in adopting AI responsibly. In addition, the presentation introduces the pioneering work of MEF University and the MEF Library in Türkiye, both leaders in integrating AI within the academic and library sectors. MEF University achieved a significant milestone in November 2023 by publishing the first book on higher education and artificial intelligence applications on a global scale. It also became the first university in Türkiye to publish its AI policy, issuing two versions to address the evolving landscape.Conference Object Adapting to adaptive learning with Blackboard, the case of MEF University(2018) Özoran, DinçerAdaptive learning (AL) systems are long studied but only recently begin to make an impact in education. As MEF, a Flipped University who embraced Flipped Learning Approach in its all faculties, we also got interested in integration of these systems. Each AL platform has its own design of UI and UX. Already learning an LMS is a challenge, understanding how a brand new platform works may hinder student motivation for learning. Blackboard Learn, being the number one prefered LMS platform in the world in higher education, has integration options with most of AL platforms. This integration facilitates to navigate and focus more on the learning tasks and experience for students. While having a solid and widely used LMS is an advantage, there are still challenges in adapting AL systems for an institution. Individual adoption of Instructors results with student resistance, as they have to pay extra fee for the platform. When students reject to pay, then Instructor cannot implement his course design. At MEF, first contact with AL platforms happened thanks to individual efforts of some instructors. Once we see the potential, we asked different platforms for trial this semester and now we have unlimited access to two big platforms and promised them to pay as an Institution. In approximately 20 courses (%5 of total) we use AL and to understand the effectiveness of these platforms, we will use six level ACUE Effective Practice Framework©: faculty engagement, faculty learning, faculty implementation, student engagement, course-level student outcomes and institutional outcomes.Article Advocacy and Collaboration in a Time of Global Upheaval: Insights from IFLA Regional Divisions(IFLA, 2025) Çimen, Ertuğrul; Koen, DianeAt the 2025 IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) in Astana, the IFLA Regional Council brought together librarians and advocates from across the globe to reflect on the pressing challenges facing libraries in an era of political polarization, social unrest, and digital transformation. Under the theme "Advocacy and Collaboration in a Time of Global Upheaval: A Unified Response from the IFLA Regional Divisions," the session highlighted how libraries are navigating censorship pressures, promoting multicultural engagement, championing access to information in overlooked communities, and responding to emerging threats to democratic participation. The presentations spanned continents and contexts, from European courts to Canadian prisons, from African misinformation campaigns to Latin American policy initiatives, demonstrating that while challenges vary by region, the library profession's commitment to intellectual freedom, equity, and democratic values remains universal. The full recording of the session is available on the IFLA YouTube channel.Presentation Akademik Kütüphanelerde Sosyal Medya Politikası: Dünyadan Örnekler(2017) Biçen Aras, BaharSosyal medya 21. yüzyılın önemli bir iletişim aracıdır. We used visual word and image connections to improve the working memory and language aptitude students and gathered a small amount of data. The study took place during the summer module of an English preparatory program and was voluntary. We developed the workshop and the methodology for students who were continuing the English preparatory program into summer school. We gave surveys and personal interviews to students and workshop instructors after the workshops to ascertain students' attitude and knowledge of the material as well as the effectiveness of the program. Research partners took notes and recordings of the workshops. End of course writing exams were referenced for quantitative data but was limited due to the workshops being voluntary. The workshops were peripheral to the course module and aimed to be as casual and accommodating to student’s heavy workload as possible while targeting specific tasks that they were responsible for in the course and final examination. Further research is needed but the limited data suggests a correlation between student’s inclusion of mind mapping techniques and their ability to complete the demands of the final exam writing rubric.Other Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Cost-Sharing Models: Experience of the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium(Elsevier, 2019) Çukadar, Sami; Çimen, ErtuğrulPurpose : This study examines the cost-sharing models used by the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS) to determine the amounts that university libraries pay for each consortial subscription. A survey was conducted among library directors and managers of ANKOS member universities to evaluate cost-sharing models in order to create improved models. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed in SPSS, the first time that these cost-sharing models have been assessed on the national level. The results of the study are presented for the benefit of other consortia and scientists/researchers and library professionals working in the field. Design/methodology/approach : This article takes a historical and descriptive approach and uses statistical methods to analyze the results of the survey. It also focuses on obtaining objective results from the Consortium members' feedback. Findings : As with other library consortia all over the world, many different cost-sharing models have been used by ANKOS. As a result of this study, the most suitable models have been determined for different scales of academic libraries. In negotiations with publishers and vendors, priority will be given to price models preferred by member institutions. Practical implications : The material presented should be useful for all academic librarians concerned with consortium systems, cost-sharing, and e-resource management, especially in the developing world. This paper also provides some key points for academic librarians in the process of establishing a consortium. Originality/value : This paper is an example of successful academic library consortium activities in a developing country and examines, in detail, the developments, opportunities, and challenges experienced since the establishment of the consortium.Conference Object Developing Standards for Adaptive Leaning Platform Usage(2023) Güler, Sabiha Elvan; Topal, İlke; Özdemir, Paker DoğuThis research aimed to develop standards for the effective use of Adaptive Learning Platforms (ALPs), embarking on a broader developmental study characterized by iterative processes of design, testing, and refinement. One of these models is flipped learning, which is a form of blended learning where students learn new content or lessons at home, and do what used to be called homework in their classroom collaboratively. This model, which has recently been developed and is based on Bloom's taxonomy of learning, has been put forth to maximize the quality of learner-centered teaching model. Unfortunately, there is very little research on this newly-developed model in EFL environment, especially in Turkey. With this in mind, this study aims to examine Turkish students' perceptions of and attitudes towards flipped learning through a questionnaire before and after the course. Also, there will be two intermediate classes, one acting as the experimental group in which the flipped classroom model will be administered. In the control group, the traditional teaching model will be used. Finally, the passing grades of the students in the control and experimental groups will be compared to see if there is a significant difference.Presentation Global Horizons, Local Struggles: Defending Democracy and Libraries Beyond Europe(2025) Çimen, ErtuğrulMEF Kütüphane Direktörü Ertuğrul Çimen, 23–27 Haziran tarihleri arasında düzenlenen Alman Kütüphaneciler Derneği Yıllık Kongresi’ne katılmış ve “Global Horizons, Local Struggles: Defending Democracy and Libraries Beyond Europe” başlıklı sunumunu gerçekleştirmiştir.Article Grevci Sendikanın Grev Uygulanan Ünitede Üye Kaybı Sonucu Grevin Sona Erdirilmesi ve Toplu İş Sözleşmesi Yetkisinin Düşüp Düşmeyeceği(MEF Üniversitesi, 2022) Akyiğit, Ercan6356 sayılı Kanun md. 75/6 hükmü, mülga 2822 sayılı Kanun md. 51/4 ile öz itibariyle benzerdir. To this end and to further improve the course, the following researchquestions emerged: How long is the optimal length of a video to capture students’ attention?;Why are some videos viewed more than others?; Why do certain videos capture students’attention for longer?; Why do students engage in some online activities more than others?.To answer these questions, YouTube and Blackboard analytics were gathered from thesecond year EAP course and compared against students’ perceptions in surveys and a focusgroup. Based on what we learnt, we asked ourselves: How can we adapt our Flippedcourses to encourage the successful patterns of learning of our learners and discourage theunsuccessful patterns? Based on the analysis of outcomes, we have identified that our EAPFlipped best-practice theories are effective, and we have further developed best practicesthat lead to student success and removed those hindering progress. Based on theseimplications, a number of clear lessons have been learned that will be incorporated intofuture courses.Conference Object
