Conference Object Impact of Introducing Semi-Rigid Moment Frames on Seismic Response of Braced Frames(2019 ISEC Press, 2019) Shen, Jay; Akbaş, Bülent; Şeker, Onur; Faytarouni, MahmoudMaximum seismic inelastic drift demand in a steel building with braced frames as primary seismic-force-resisting (SFR) system tends to concentrate in few stories without considering inherent participation of designed gravity-force-resisting (GFR) system in actual structural stiffness and strength. The influence of GFR system on stiffness and strength can be taken into account by considering the composite action in beam-to-column shear connections that exist in modern steel building construction to form actual semi-rigid moment-resisting frames. Therefore, modeling semi-rigid moment frames as an equivalent to the GFR system in braced frame buildings could be utilized as a representative to the strength provided by gravity frames. This paper presents a seismic evaluation of a six-story chevron braced frame, with and without semi-rigid moment frame. Four different cases are investigated under a set of ground motions and results are discussed in terms of story drift distribution along the height. The results pointed out that the current findings lay a foundation to conduct further investigation on the seismic performance of braced frames as designed SFR system together with GFR system.Article Contesting Labels: Revisiting Old Questionnaires(Cambridge University Press, 2020) Ada, Serhan; Yücel, ŞebnemAs a response to several questionnaires, manifestos, interviews, and letters that were included in the book Modern Art in the Arab World: Primary Documents, this article carries out a new questionnaire with seven artists form various backgrounds and geographies, in an attempt to update and re-question some of the issues that were highlighted in the collected essays. The questionnaire includes three questions, each focusing on a different issue. The first issue considers the validity of the term “Arab Art,” the second tries to identify the main dynamics of contemporary artistic production, and the last one questions the relation of contemporary production of arts to geography and history. The damage caused by these disasters has been so extensive that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) proved incapable of handling the situation. In this article, we present a novel approach for urgent disaster transport with the aim of minimizing loss of life. In this context, we are investigating the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise algorithm (DBSCAN) to cluster the large geographic zone affected by the 2023 earthquake in Turkiye. The clustering is done based on hospitals' capacity on one hand and damages on the other hand. The ambulance dispatching task is then tackled using a new fuzzy version of Elephant Herding Optimization called FEHO. This approach addresses the challenge of dispatching ambulances to cover emergency locations effectively and optimally in the clustered regions. Experiments conducted on real data demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in managing emergency transportation and highlight its potential to minimize the number of casualties.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5State of the Art in Application of Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation in Turkey(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2023) Şadan, BahadırThis paper summarizes the passive structural control system applications and other related developments in Turkey, emphasizing the period between 2019 and 2022. The country hosts state-of-the-art seismic isolation applications, relatively greater in size, and use more isolators in each project (415 isolators per building on average) compared to the other seismic isolation projects worldwide. Construction of the world's largest seismic isolated building, Istanbul Basaksehir Pine and Sakura City Hospital, covering more than 1 million square meters of area and employing more than 2000 seismic isolators, was completed and has been in service since May 2020. 1915 Canakkale Bridge, constructed in memory of the great war of Canakkale during World War I, is now the world's longest suspension bridge with a 2023m main span length. Eight massive hydraulic dampers were used at the main deck and 48 at the approach viaducts in combination with 72 seismic isolators. Construction of a residential building complex in Istanbul consisting of 16 isolated blocks covering more than 170,000 m(2) area and having 454 seismic isolators is coming to an end very soon. Historical Nusretiye Clock Tower in Istanbul was relocated a few meters over seismic isolators. Historical Goztepe Railway Station in Istanbul was retrofitted to accommodate an additional railway line using seismic isolation technology. Seismic codes for buildings and bridges now include rules for the seismically isolated design of structures. Additionally, all seismic isolation designs must be peer-reviewed by law. The Neuroscience-based Learning (NBL) technique is a novel neuro-educational approach that applies the implicit neuro-physiological mechanisms underlying vivid and highly-arousal emotion-al experiences leading to long-term memory retention. The NBL is devised from a cybernetic system point of view, by explaining the novel neuro-physiological learning scheme describing the relation among the environment and the learner’s internal mental processes ranging from perceptions, comparison with previous experiences and memories, immediate sensations and reactions, emotions, desires, intentions, higher order cognitive functions, and controlled actions towards the environment. While explaining biological processes, the scheme also relates the types of memory systems with their non-associative and associative learning mechanisms, and the variables that modulate learning. NBL proposes the triggers for a vivid and highly-arousal emotional learning, which are novelty, unpredictability, sense of low control, threat to ego, avoidance (aversion-mediated learning), and reward (reward-based learning). © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Conference Object Seismic Evaluation of Square Hss Braces in Scbf Using Regression Analysis(ISEC Press, 2019) Shen, Jay; Akbaş, Bülent; Şeker, Onur; Faytarouni, MahmoudSince the 1990s, structural engineering practice geared toward the use of hollow structural sections (HSS), notably square HSS, for their economy, and ease of design and construction. According to the AISC Seismic Provisions, during a severe earthquake, these braces could undergo post-buckling axial deformations 10 to 20 times their yielding deformation. However, recent experimental studies indicate that braces made of square HSS, depending on their size, width-to-thickness, and slenderness ratio, are vulnerable to fracture even prior to 10. Therefore, relying on past experimental studies comprised of a few square HSS specimens to develop seismic requirements for SCBF with square HSS could lead to underestimation of the seismic risk. This paper aims to evaluate the fracture risk of braces in existing SCBFs designed in accordance with AISC 341-05 and AISC 341-16 through incremental dynamic analyses (IDA) along with experimentally developed regression model that estimates fracture.Book Part Citation - WoS: 13Quantifying the Grounding Probability in Narrow Waterways(CRC Press, 2020) Özlem, Ş.; Altan, Y.C.; Otay, E.N.; Or, I.The aim of this paper is to estimate the grounding probability of vessels while navigating in narrowwaterways. In this study, the grounding probability is modelled as a combination the geometric probability, defined as vessel being on a grounding course and the causation probability, defined as the probability that the vessel is unable to avoid a grounding while being on a grounding course. A mathematical model is developed to estimate the geometric probability where the causation probability is estimated through a specially designed Bayesian network. The Strait of Istanbul, one of the narrowest waterways in the world, is used as a test case. The resulting grounding and ramming accidents are 2.8 times the ship collisions. The most critical causes of grounding accidents are the machine failure, steering inadequacy and lack of pilot support, respectively. (1953, lyrics by Pablo Beltran Ruiz and music by Pablo Beltran Ruiz and Luis Demetrio Traconis Molina), which has had many language versions so far (e.g. Arabic, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, etc.), including the English Sway (1954, lyrics by Norman Gimbel), which is often erroneously thought to be the original. The lyrics have also been rewritten in Turkish by Fecri Ebcioglu in 1968/1987, Yesil Giresunlu in 1977, and Athena in 2000. With particular reference to Johan Franzon's analysis of song translation, the present article analyzes the Turkish versions in an attempt to investigate the possible constraints behind the decisions taken by the various agents of the cultural import. Given that a translated version of a source song is expected to reproduce the music and/or the lyrics and/or the sung performance, the Turkish versions appear to be adaptations with rewritten lyrics, which enable a reproduction of the melody and a sung performance similar to that of the source song. The data analysis further suggests that prosodic constraints rank the highest among the layers of singability and that translators' attitude towards the literary quality of the original lyrics might influence their decision to adopt assimilating strategies or not.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1A Simplified Approach for Site-Specific Design Spectrum(2018) Tönük, Gökçe; Kurtuluş, Aslı; Ansal, AtillaThe design acceleration spectrum requires site investigations and site-response analyses in accordance with the local seismic hazard. The variability in earthquake source and path effects may be considered using a large number of acceleration records compatible with the earthquake hazard. An important step is the selection and scaling of input acceleration records. Likewise, a large number of soil profiles need to be considered to account for the variability of site conditions. One option is to use Monte Carlo simulations with respect to layer thickness and shear wave velocity profiles to account for the variability of the site factors. The local seismic hazard analysis yields a uniform hazard acceleration spectrum on the bedrock outcrop. Site-specific response analyses also need to produce a uniform hazard acceleration spectrum on the ground surface. Whereas the two-dimensional graphic designs employ certain geometric relations and rules, theirmaking, in three-dimensional space, relies on the spatial material qualities and the overall architectural form more than just visual transformations. For understanding how their architectonic harmony was implemented, it is crucial to consider not onlythe geometric design but also other parameters such as the surface geometry, the physical properties of the material, and the crafting technique. Under the patronage of Seljuks in Anatolia, the rigorous application of the decoration program on historicalbuildings manifests a collaboration coordinated by a master builder between mathematicians, designers, and craftsmen. Geometric patterns were applied to all kinds of building surfaces. Dome decorations particularly addressed challenges ofbuilding with spherical geometry. We investigate the historical ways to construct continuous patterns on dome surfaces and how each simultaneously handles aspects of geometrical calculation, the design, and construction processes.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Eaf Ladle Steel Slag as a Geo-Material: Compaction and Shear Strength Characteristics(2018) Yıldırım, İrem Zeynep; Prezzi, MonicaThe numerous issues associated with the excess steel slag that is disposed of in landfills every year can be reduced by using it as a geo-material. This paper provides the results of laboratory tests (i.e., sieve, hydrometer, specific gravity, compaction, compaction-particle degradation, and large-scale direct shear with a box size of 30.5 x 30.5 x 20 cm) performed on electric-arc-furnace ladle [EAF(L)] steel slag from a mini-mill in Indiana. Based on standard proctor test results, the maximum dry unit weight values of the EAF(L) steel slag were in the 16.8-to-20 kN/m(3) range at the optimum moisture contents of 11-13%. The results of the large-scale direct shear tests performed on EAF(L) steel slag, compacted at 95-100% relative compaction and sheared with normal stress ranging from 50 to 300 kPa, showed that it has excellent frictional characteristics, with friction angles between 40 and 45 degrees. Based on the results from this study, due to its shear strength characteristics, EAF(L) steel slag has the potential to be utilized as a geo-material to improve the shear strength of various marginal soils.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Near-Fault Earthquake Ground Motion and Seismic Isolation Design(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2023) Harmandar, Ebru; Erdik, Mustafa; Demircioglu-Tumsa, Mine B.; Şadan, Bahadır; Tuzun, Cuneyt; Ulker, OmerSeismic isolation is one of the most reliable passive structural control techniques with adequately established standards for the earthquake protection of structures from earthquakes. However, it has been shown that the seismic isolation systems may not function the best for the near-fault ground motions, since in the proximity of a capable fault, the ground motions are significantly affected by the rupture mechanism and may generate high demands on the isolation system and the structure. In fact, several earthquake resistant design codes state that the seismically isolated structures located at near-fault sites should be designed by considering larger seismic demands than the demand on structures at far-field sites. When the fault ruptures in forward direction to the site most of the seismic energy arrives in coherent long-period ground velocity pulses. The ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) typically cannot account for such effects with limited distance metrics and lack adequate data at large magnitudes and near distances. For the reliable earthquake design of the isolated structure in near fault conditions that meets the performance objectives, the 3D design basis ground motion(s) need to be appropriately assessed. Measures in the design of the isolation system, such as modifications in the stiffness and damping characteristics, as well as in the limitation of vertical effects are needed. The behavior of the base-isolated buildings under near-fault (NF) ground motions with fling-step and forward-directivity characteristics are investigated with a rational assessment of design-basis near-fault ground motion, are investigated in a parametric format. The parametric study includes several variables, including the structural system flexibility; number of stories; isolation system characteristic (yield) strength, and the isolation periods related to the post-elastic stiffness. Furthermore, the effect of additional damping by viscous dampers were tested for some selected cases. The PGA values which have been recorded by various stations show values as high as 1.2g as well as relatively spectacular maximum vertical component (PGV). The focus of the paper is to focus on a noticeable phenomenon in the city of Kahramanmaras where, on one hand, almost all buildings in the historical centre have either collapsed or been severely damaged by the two earthquakes (Pazarcik at 4:17 AM and Elbistan at 1:24 PM, respectively) of February 6th 2023, whereas, on the other hand, structures in the surrounding areas have significantly less damage. Moreover, it is evident from seismic stations’ recordings that impact (in terms of PGA, acceleration and velocity time histories) of first major shock (M7.7 Pazarcik) is higher than the one of the second major shock (M7.6 Elbistan) at similar magnitude and comparable distance to the epicenter. For the sake of investigating further the influence of local soil conditions as possible reason for the observed events shear wave velocity and soil deposit fundamental frequency have been measured in two spots – first, where multiple collapsed structures were detected and second, a neighbouring area with mostly standing buildings. Results indicate that the on-site measurement of only S-waves might lead to wrong assumptions in terms of microseismical zonation and further considerations shall be accounted. To that end, it builds upon the income-contingent loans and higher education funding literature to propose a system that captures the value of the student’s potential future income streams as a token to be offered to higher education stakeholders willing to invest in a young person’s future, make an impact toward the Sustainable Development Goals, or simply, to diversify their portfolios and hedge against market downturns. The Future Income Token “FIT” is conceptually devised through a literature review and builds on previous findings by the author. This interdisciplinary study fits into the blockchain, crowdfunding, and higher education finance literature. Given the increasing difficulty of mobilizing funds for higher education and, the almost universal, growing student loan default problem, it asks the question: What aspects of higher education tokenomics may give higher education stakeholders the incentive to contribute to a student’s education, that other forms of financing do not? Participants completed surveys measuring personality traits, self-esteem, material and monetary values, compulsive and impulsive buying tendencies, self-control, and impulsiveness. Financial surveys also assessed financial literacy and knowledge of financial concepts. The results indicated that extraversion, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and experiential self-control were significant predictors of consumer credit usage. These findings suggest that a finance company can use these personality traits and financial characteristics to develop a more accurate and effective credit risk assessment procedure, such as psychometric tests. © 2024, Sosyoekonomi Society. All rights reserved.Article Drawing the Line: on the Impossibility of Utopia(Intellect Ltd, 2024) Yücel, ŞebnemWhen Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout ventured into developing a zero -carbon, no -waste city in 2005, there were no such examples in the world. His artistic vision, complete with a full set of drawings and models, predated any real attempts to build one.1 Van Lieshout, a controversial artist known for his independent state in Rotterdam harbour (AVL-Ville), has 'dissected systems' in his work, be they systems of society or of the human body.2 While dissecting systems, he has often turned to design and architecture, creating provocative work that blurs the line between reality and fantasy.3 His 2005 zero -carbon city project was no exception.4 Van Lieshout's city was a compact one, covering approximately fifty square kilometres. With a set of calculations, models, drawings, paintings, and even objects, the project was complete. A business plan that accompanied the design outlined a program to maintain the city's profitability, an annual profit of 7.5 billion Euro to be exact.5 The project's description referenced some of the important keywords for urban design today, including zero -carbon design, efficiency, and profitability, ultimately suggesting a responsible, ethical, and a desired future. This was not exactly the case, however. This was - as he labelled it - a 'Slave City'. As the name suggests, Van Lieshout's Slave City would be populated by worker slaves who would be divided into four categories:6 healthy and suitable for work (6 per cent of the population), healthy and unsuitable for work (16 per cent), unhealthy and unsuitable for work (29 per cent) and the majority, unhealthy, unsuitable for work, and tasteless (49 per cent).7 Based on theseBook Part Monetary Coordination and Regulation Policies of Spillover Effects on Asset Dynamics(Springer, 2016) Kılıç, ErdemIn this study we propose a model for excessive volatility regulation. The model dealswith the control of shocks in capital markets. After describing a transmission mechanism thattransfers shocks in a macroeconomic variable, we establish a model how to control the shocks inthe framework. Two economies are considered with alternative constellations in coordination ofpolicies. Spillover effects under coordination are less severe, than the spillover effects under Nashequilibrium in the case of comovements of asset volatilities. In other terms, coordination helps tocure the contagious effects, in the case, where two countries are affected by the same spillovereffect in the same direction.
