Conference Object 1+1=3 Systems of Didactic Communication(2015) Belek Leandro, Müge; Teixeira, Frederico FialhoThe construction of knowledge is a transitional element, as it is build in our minds and through empirical experience. Similarly, in order to experience space – whatever kind – one has to be present. Nonetheless as one is constantly immersed into a space, our mental space or knowledge is constantly producing new paths of connections, either consciously or unconsciously. "1+1=3 Systems of Didactic Communication" is an artwork that intensifies the question of education is not based on knowledge but rather creativity. Through a multimodal spatial experience we retraces how and why one may became influenced by creativity through a critique of education itself. Until it leaves its false paths, "1+1=3" demonstrates that knowledge will remain only a wordy dialectic if it is not exerted through creativity. Through a multimodal and virtual intensity, "1+1=3" prompts that digital knowledge and creativity must be rooted in experience for education to become a genuine evolution of knowledge. And in the quest for unanswered questions, the creative dimension of human life and the importance of intuition must be emphasized. A source of enquiry for students as well as educators, 1+1=3 reveals a philosophy that is always dynamic, blending humanity’s creative drive with its mastery in knowledge goes beyond an addition of factors. 1+1=3 was on display on Istanbul Modern Vitra Contemporary Architecture Series as a work under Dream to Realities Exhibition.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 11441. First, the sound pressure measurements in a quiet room using typical household refrigerators are conducted and the noise characteristics of the refrigerators are presented. Then, the flow noise in household refrigerators is quantified using the results of the overall analysis and Fourier transform of the measured sound pressure data. After that, the flow noise in household refrigerators is quantified using the sound pressure measurements conducted using a specially designed test rig. First, the sound absorption coefficients and transmission losses of commonly used natural fibers and their composites are presented, by clearly reporting the thickness of the samples, for three different frequency ranges (<500 Hz: low, 500–2000 Hz: medium, and >2000 Hz: high). In addition, the sound absorption coefficients (for low- and medium-frequency ranges) and noise reduction coefficients of some 40-cm-thick samples are overlaid in order to directly compare their performances. Second, the physical properties, such as the density, diameter, and length of biofibers, and mechanical properties, such as the damping (or loss factor) and Young’s modulus of biofibers and their composites, are presented in detail. For comparison purposes, the acoustic and mechanical properties of some conventional materials, such as carbon and glass fibers, are included in the tables and figures. Finally, the effects of some parameters, such as pretreatment, fiber diameter, fiber/matrix ratio, moisture content, manufacturing and machining parameters/techniques, and measurement conditions/methods, on the acoustic and mechanical properties of natural materials are presented. In this study, the Young’s moduli and damping (or loss factors) of some jute and luffa fiber-reinforced biocomposites are investigated. The effects of fiber/resin ratio and thickness on the mechanical properties of the jute and luffa composites are identified via an experimental approach. For this purpose, acoustic and structural frequency response functions of some homogeneous and hybrid jute and luffa composite plates with different fiber/resin ratios and thicknesses are measured. By analyzing the measured frequency response functions using the circle-fit method, the modal frequencies and loss factors of the homogeneous and hybrid composite plates are determined. By assuming that the homogeneous plates are isotropic, the same plates are modeled using the finite element method, and by comparing the experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the elastic properties of the homogeneous plates are determined. In addition, the same homogeneous plates are modeled by considering an anisotropic material model, and the associated material properties are determined. The International Federation for Structural Concrete, 2018) Yikici, T.A.; Chen, R.H.L.In this paper, a 2D finite volume analysis methodology was used to predict temperature development within three different bridge pier caps. MATLAB® was employed to generate a program that solves the governing heat transfer equation where development of thermo-physical concrete properties was defined as a function of degree of hydration. The rate of heat generation was obtained experimentally via adiabatic calorimetry and the activation energy was determined following the ASTM C 1074 procedure to implement equivalent age concept. 2D finite volume analysis results were presented in comparison with the recorded concrete temperatures from the field. The present study tested this prediction in 32 societies and also examines the role of wealth-based categorization in explaining this relationship. We found that people who perceived higher economic inequality were indeed more likely to consider wealth as a meaningful basis for categorization. Unexpectedly, however, higher levels of perceived inequality were associated with perceiving the wealthy as less competent and assertive and the poor as more competent and assertive. Unpacking this further, exploratory analyses showed that the observed tendency to stereotype the wealthy negatively only emerged in societies with lower social mobility and democracy and higher corruption. This points to the importance of understanding how socio-structural features that co-occur with economic inequality may shape perceptions of the wealthy and the poor. © 2022 The Authors. In this paper, we propose a model, which replicates the generative process of the mixed-membership stochastic block model (MMSB) within the generic allocation framework of Bayesian allocation model (BAM) and BAM-MMSB. In contrast to traditional blockmodels, BAM-MMSB considers the observations as Poisson counts generated by a base Poisson process and marks according to the generative process of MMSB. Moreover, the optimal number of communities for BAM-MMSB is estimated by computing the variational approximations of the marginal likelihood for each model order. Experiments on synthetic and real data sets show that the proposed approach promises a generalized model selection solution that can choose not only the model size but also the most appropriate decomposition.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1A Benchmark Dataset for Turkish Data-To Generation(Elsevier, 2022) Demir, Şeniz; Öktem, SezaIn the last decades, data-to-text (D2T) systems that directly learn from data have gained a lot of attention in natural language generation. These systems need data with high quality and large volume, but unfortunately some natural languages suffer from the lack of readily available generation datasets. This article describes our efforts to create a new Turkish dataset (Tr-D2T) that consists of meaning representation and reference sentence pairs without fine-grained word alignments. We utilize Turkish web resources and existing datasets in other languages for producing meaning representations and collect reference sentences by crowdsourcing native speakers. We particularly focus on the generation of single-sentence biographies and dining venue descriptions. In order to motivate future Turkish D2T studies, we present detailed benchmarking results of different sequence-to-sequence neural models trained on this dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first of its kind that provides preliminary findings and lessons learned from the creation of a new Turkish D2T dataset. Bu doğrultuda literatürde ikinci el pazarı kavramı üzerine geçmişten günümüze yapılan çalışmalar üzerinden bibliyometrik bir analiz yapılmıştır. Çalışma için toplam 235 doküman incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar ikinci el tüketimin yeni bir tüketici davranışı türü olarak ortaya çıktığını ve daha sonra literatürde bir iş modeli olarak incelendiğini ve sürdürülebilirliğin hem akademik hem de uygulama alanlarında artan önemi ile birlikte hatırı sayılır bir tüketim şekli haline geldiğini göstermektedir. According to thistraditional distinction, animals which are not humans but being “other” species in our World,have mostly been considered as objects and thus subject to personal property. In these personorientedlegal systems, including the Turkish one, even the rules relating to animals essentiallyaims to protect the owner of the animals, but not the animals themselves.However, today this paradigm is slowly challenged as “right to life” (to some extent) isgranted to animals under many legal systems (for instance under the Turkish Law on Protectionof Animals dated 24 June 2004). Nevertheless, the boundaries of this right are the interests ofthe people. Unfortunately, the concepts of animal dignity and right to life do not provide enoughprotection to animals. But what could be the solution to better protect the animals? Grantinglegal personality to the animals? Perhaps it is a bridge too far…Throughout the history, personality have been granted to different objects if it isbeneficial and feasible to do so. Accordingly, this paper firstly aims to evaluate whether it isbeneficial and feasible to grant legal personality -partially or as a whole- to the animals. Underthis first sub-title we will discuss as well whether granting to each and every animal a separatepersonality or a sole conceptual one to the entire nature including the animals. Secondly ourwork further targets to reconsider the traditional distinction of persons and things to provide amore specific legal status for animals. Perhaps such a reconsideration could enable us to solveanother controversial issue of our contemporary world: that is the legal status of “strong”artificial intelligence. Moreover, our discussions will comprise the analyse of the legal statusof the “ancient roman law’s slave”, considered as an object though a human being, benefitingfrom different types of legal protection at different levels, at different times. We describe a mathematical model that considers both regular costs (including production, setup and inventory holding costs) and expected overtime costs (related to the excess usage of capacity). The CLSP-SSTO is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming problem. A procedure is proposed to exactly compute the expected overtime for a given setup and production plan when the setup times follow a Gamma distribution. A sample average approximation procedure is applied to obtain upper bounds and a statistical lower bound. This is then used to benchmark the performance of two additional heuristics. A first heuristic is based on changing the capacity in the deterministic counterpart, while the second heuristic artificially modifies the setup time. We conduct our computational experiments on well-known problem instances and provide comprehensive analyses to evaluate the performance of each heuristic. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. The two participants were high school mathematics teachers, who vary in their levels of experience. Two forms of data were collected to obtain more in-depth data about the transformations within among mathematical ideas: a questionnaire including 14 open-ended mathematical tasks and semi-structured interviews. Results indicated that individuals had different ways in constructing mathematical ideas and that their mathematical ideas were derived from the transition between meaning and formalism.conference-paper.listelement.badge A Comparative Analysis of Ruling Right-wing Populism towards Globalization in the Context of Refugee Crises: The Cases of Turkey and Hungary(2023) Saatçioğlu, BekenHow do governing, right-wing populist parties in and outside the EU approach globalization on the issue of international migration? This paper addresses this question by focusing on Hungary’s Fidesz and Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the context of the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis. It studies the discourses of these parties and their leaders regarding the liberal international order and the EU, and evaluates whether EU membership makes a difference in these arguments. This fills a gap in the literature because how ruling right-wing populism in middle-power states like Hungary and Turkey challenges the global system, and what kind of globalization or de-globalization it asks for in the light of migration issues remains to be scrutinized.
