Transportation engineers and policy makers try to improve the quality of urban transportation systems by developing projects to enhance the pedestrian experience, reduce private car usage, reduce total time spent in the network through different control strategies, and diminish the detrimental effects. In this context, this study takes Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and pedestrians into account at signal-controlled intersections. A novel intersection signal control optimization methodology that incorporates pedestrian delays and vehicular emissions from CAVs is presented. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II is utilized to solve the multiobjective optimization problem. For the emission calculations, the MOVES3 emission model is utilized. The proposed framework is tested on real-world case study. Simulation experiments showed major improvements in pedestrian delays and lower emissions. © 2024 The Authors. A discriminative language model (DLM) is typically a linear or log-linear model consisting of a weight vector associated with a feature vector representation of a sentence. This flexible representation can include linguistically and statistically motivated features that incorporate morphological and syntactic information. At test time, DLMs are used to rerank the output of an ASR system, represented as an N-best list or lattice. During training, both negative and positive examples are used with the aim of directly optimizing the error rate. Various machine learning methods, including the structured perceptron, large margin methods and maximum regularized conditional log-likelihood, have been used for estimating the parameters of DLMs. Typically positive examples for DLM training come from the manual transcriptions of acoustic data while the negative examples are obtained by processing the same acoustic data with an ASR system. Recent research generalizes DLM training by either using automatic transcriptions for the positive examples or simulating the negative examples.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Acoustic Cavitation Model Based on a Novel Reduced Order Gas Pressure Law(2021) Pasinlioğlu, Şenay; Delale, Can FuadThe thermal behavior of a spherical gas bubble in a liquid excited by an acoustic pressure signal is investigated by constructing an iterative solution of the energy balance equations between the gas bubble and the surrounding liquid in the uniform pressure approximation. This iterative solution leads to hierarchy equations for the radial partial derivatives of the temperature at the bubble wall, which control the temporal rate of change of the gas pressure and gas temperature within the bubble. In particular, a closure relation for the hierarchy equations is introduced based on the ansatz that approximates the rapid change of state during the collapse of the bubble from almost isothermal to almost adiabatic behavior by time averaging the complex dynamics of change of state over a relatively short characteristic time. This, in turn, leads to the desired reduced order gas pressure law exhibiting power law dependence on the bubble wall temperature and on the bubble radius, with the polytropic index depending on the isentropic exponent of the gas and on a parameter that is a function of the Péclet number and a characteristic time scale. Results of the linear theory for gas bubbles are recovered by identifying this parameter as a function of the Péclet number based on the Minnaert frequency. The novel gas pressure law is then validated against the near-isothermal solution and against the results of the numerical simulations of the original energy balance equations for large amplitude oscillations using spectral methods. Consequently, an acoustic cavitation model that accounts for phase change but that neglects mass diffusion is constructed by employing the reduced order gas pressure law together with the Plesset–Zwick solution for the bubble wall temperature and the Keller–Miksis equation for spherical bubble dynamics. Results obtained using variable interface properties for acoustically driven cavitation bubbles in water show that the time variations of the bubble radius and the bubble wall temperature lie between those obtained by the isothermal and adiabatic laws depending on the value of the Péclet number and the characteristic time scale.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 4All You Fear Is Love: the Roles of Rejection by Intimate Others(Wiley, 2023) Aracı-İyiaydın, Ayşegül; Toplu-Demirtaş, Ezgi; Rohner, Ronald P. P.; Akçabozan-Kayabol, Nazlı BüşraInterpersonal acceptance-rejection theory (IPARTheory) asserts that recollections of parental rejection in childhood tend to result in psychological maladjustment and intimacy problems in later romantic relationships. Informed by IPARTheory, we investigated the association between maternal & paternal rejection, and fear of intimacy by the mediating role of psychological maladjustment in a Turkish sample with 462 mostly young adults. We further explored the moderator role of gender in Model 1 and the moderating roles of both gender and intimate partner rejection in Model 2. Model 1 revealed that adults who had experienced maternal and paternal rejection in childhood tended to be psychologically maladjusted. Consequently, they also tended to have a fear of intimacy, regardless of gender. Model 2 revealed that women who recall having been rejected in childhood by their mothers tended to be psychologically maladjusted and to have a significant fear of intimacy when they also experienced moderate or more than moderate intimate-partner rejection. However, both women and men who experienced paternal rejection in childhood tended to be psychologically maladjusted and to experience a greater fear of intimacy when they perceived any degree of intimate partner rejection. As UEFA limited clubs’ expenses with their incomes, the transfer market took a hit. This paper demonstrates the impact of FFP on Russian Premier League teams’ transfer activity, examines how transfers’ demography and career profiles changed and investigates the changes in competitive balance after break-even. A regression discontinuity design is conducted in order to estimate the policy impact. The empirical results suggest that Russian clubs have been severely affected by break-even in terms of transfer expenditure and balance and started to transfer more U21 players and players from lesser leagues of the world. Melis; Ruffman, TedThe Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a very widely used scale in which parents, teachers or the child rate various aspects of the child's well-being. It is widely used in the Western world and is translated into 80+ languages. It is also used in countries that do not classify as WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic). However, unlike WEIRD countries, some studies indicate that the psychometric properties of the SDQ when used in non-WEIRD countries are questionable. Therefore, we gave the SDQ to the mothers and teachers of 310 3- to 5-year-olds in urban centres of Turkey and examined its psychometric properties. Turkey is not a WEIRD country because it is not Western, although the participants in our study were well educated, living in an industrialized area, rich relative to others in Turkey (although poor relative to Westerners) and democratic. As such, it is not drastically different from WEIRD countries and our question was whether even relatively small deviations from standard WEIRD criteria could result in questionable psychometric properties for the SDQ.Conference Object Anamorphic Projection as a Novel Game Mechanic for Investigating Impossible Spaces in 3D Puzzle Games(IEEE Computer Society, 2025) Aydındoğan, Irem; Alaçam, SemaThis study introduces a novel game mechanic for 3D puzzle games based on anamorphic projection to explore impossible spaces. By using perspective-driven spatial interactions, the mechanic creates environments that challenge conventional Euclidean logic. Players advance by aligning their viewpoint with distorted projections, making perception a central element of gameplay. A usability test with 33 participants assessed the mechanic's effectiveness through a structured questionnaire focusing on six dimensions: Ease of Control, Goals and Rules, Challenge, Mastery, Curiosity, and Immersion. Results indicate high engagement and cognitive stimulation, especially in mastery and goal clarity. These findings highlight the potential of anamorphic projection to support perceptually rich and mentally engaging puzzle experiences in future game design. © 2025 IEEE.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 9Attachment Insecurity and Restrictive Engulfment in College Student Relationships: the Mediating Role of Relationship Satisfaction(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2018) Hatipoğlu Sümer, Zeynep; Murray, Christine; Toplu Demirtaş, EzgiPurpose Studies on restrictive engulfment (RE) – a subtype of psychological aggression in intimate relationships – have focused either on insecure attachment or relationship satisfaction, not both. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate relationship satisfaction as a potential mediator of the associations between anxious and avoidant attachment and RE perpetration among college students. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 322 college students (178 women, 137 men, and seven other gender-identified) completed the experiences in close relationship inventory, relationship assessment scale, and RE subscale of the multidimensional measure of emotional abuse. Findings Among the sample, 89.3 and 90.5 percent of the college women and men, respectively, reported to have used isolating, restricting, monitoring, and controlling behaviors. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that all direct paths except for that from avoidant attachment to RE were significant. Moreover, significant indirect paths were identified from anxious and avoidant attachment to RE via relationship satisfaction. Research limitations/implications The results of this study should be interpreted with consideration of the study’s limitations. First, the data were drawn from a convenience sample of Turkish college students. Second, the design of the study is correlational; therefore, we cannot assume causality. Finally, this study utilized self-report and retrospective data. Practical implications Though the findings are preliminary, they may inform college counselors and other mental health practitioners about the nature of RE within college students’ dating relationships. College students who are unhappy with their dating relationships but still in those relationships (i.e. they choose not to leave) should be assessed for whether they are the perpetrators and/or recipients of psychological aggression, especially in light of the high rates of this form of aggression in the current and previous studies. Furthermore, assessing psychological dating aggression perpetrators for insecure attachment styles may help mental health professionals who work with college students, envisage the sessions toward areas in the need of improvement, such as their views of themselves and others. Self-esteem, feelings of insecurity and inadequacy in relationships, and dependency can be worked with these clients. Social implications The results of this study also have implications for the prevention of psychological aggression before it occurs. The need for prevention programs is evident in the high rates of psychologically controlling behaviors among college students. It may be useful to implement campus wide programs to raise awareness regarding psychological aggression, such as through events, seminars, posters, flyers, and talks with student groups. Originality/value Despite the limitations of this study, its findings offer insight into the factors that influence the perpetration of psychological aggression within dating relationships among college students. Adult attachment theory offers a useful lens for understanding the possible driving forces behind college students’ controlling behaviors toward their dating partners. Would this be the correct representation of the situation at hand? Does it make any sense for Turkey to engage Russia, an archrival nation, to enhance the security of the country? Is the S-400 deal worth the risk of alienating the allied nations whose projected sanctions may have wide-ranging political, economic and military repercussions? With these questions in mind, this paper will try to shed light on the specifics of the S-400 deal that make one think that it may indeed make sense for Turkey to bear the brunt of engaging Russia. In the same vein, the paper will assess the impact of the S-400 deal on Turkey’s defense industries. The paper will also present the author’s conception of the current “international political non-order” as an underlying factor behind the deal. A considerable number of studies assume a monopolistic viewpoint and formulate a mathematical model to optimize an objective function of a single decision maker. In contrast, competitive facility location (CFL) problem is based on the premise that there exist competition in the market among different firms. When one of the competing firms acts as the leader and the other firm, called the follower, reacts to the decision of the leader, a sequential-entry CFL problem is obtained, which gives rise to a Stackelberg type of game between two players. A successful and widely applied framework to formulate this type of CFL problems is bilevel programming (BP). Findings indicate that entrepreneurial knowledge has a significant and positive effect on entrepreneurial intention (EI), whereas personal attitude (PA) and personal behavioural control (PBC) mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial knowledge and intention. Findings also indicate that the third construct of TPB, namely social norm, moderates the mediating role of the indirect intention effect of entrepreneurial knowledge through PA and PBC differently. Like any other cancer type, early detection is the key factor for the patient's recovery. Integration of artificial intelligence with medical image processing can aid to decrease misdiagnosis. The purpose of the article is to show that deep learning-based image classification can aid doctors in the healthcare field for better diagnosis of skin lesions. VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures were chosen to examine the effect of CNN networks on the classification of skin cancer types. For the implementation of these networks, the ISIC 2019 Challenge has been chosen due to the richness of data. As a result of the experiments, confusion matrices were obtained and it was observed that ResNet50 architecture achieved 91.23% accuracy and VGG16 architecture 83.89% accuracy. Understanding stance as co-constructed within dialogic interaction uncovers subtleties of how interlocutors use language to express their subjectivities and thus, negotiate their interpersonal relationship. The notion of face and facework, or relational work (Locher 2004), is therefore relevant to the understanding of stance in interaction. Drawing on Du Bois’ (2007) stance triangle, our study analyzes oppositional stance in a single, extended interaction and shows how two interlocutors in an academic setting jointly construct oppositional stance, each by drawing on their own interpretations. Our analysis indicates that this co-constructed oppositional stance is enacted throughout three broader stages, which we call initiation, negotiation, and resolution. We also demonstrate that expressing oppositional stance is a complex process where interlocutors employ various discourse strategies to express pessimistic evaluation, shifting positionings, and (dis)alignment. Similar to previous studies on the standard guesswork, established bounds on moments quantify the accumulated cost of guesses required for correctly identifying the unknown choice and are expressed in terms of the Rényi's entropy. A new random variable is introduced to bridge between cost of guessing and the standard guesswork and establish the guessing cost exponent on the moments of the optimal guessing. First, the mathematical models commonly used for predicting the static displacement of a sphere located at an elastic medium interface are presented and their performances are compared. After that, based on the finite element analyses, an accurate mathematical model to predict the static displacement of a sphere located at an elastic medium interface valid for different Poisson's ratios of the medium and small and large sphere displacements is proposed. Then, an improved mathematical model for the dynamic response of a sphere located at a viscoelastic medium interface is developed. In addition to the Young's modulus of the medium and the radius of the sphere, the model takes into account the density, Poisson's ratio and viscosity of the medium, the mass of the sphere and the radiation damping. The effects of the radiation damping, the Young's modulus, density and viscosity of the medium and the density of the sphere on the dynamic response of the sphere located at a viscoelastic medium interface are explored. The developed model can be used to understand the dynamic responses of spherical objects located at viscoelastic medium interfaces in practical applications. Furthermore, the proposed model is a significant tool for graduate students and researchers in the fields of engineering, materials science and physics to gain insight into the dynamic responses of spheres located at viscoelastic medium interfaces.
