Article Citation - WoS: 53Citation - Scopus: 56Experimental Evaluation of Eaf Ladle Steel Slag as a Geo-Fill Material: Mineralogical, Physical & Mechanical Properties(2017) Yıldırım, İrem Zeynep; Prezzi, MonicaDespite of significant efforts in the last decades towards utilization of steel slag in the construction industry, steel slag stockpiling and landfilling operations do not seem to be declining in steel-producing countries. Use of steel slag as a construction material requires understanding of its engineering properties and development of a methodology to address its swelling potential. This paper focuses on the results of a series of laboratory tests (grain-size analysis, X-ray diffraction, specific gravity, compaction, maximum and minimum dry unit weight, direct shear, and long-term swelling tests) performed on samples of electric-arc-furnace ladle (EAF(L)) steel slag to assess its potential to be used as a geo-material. Direct shear test results indicated that the EAF(L) steel slag exhibits comparable frictional properties to angular crushed sand. Based on the leachate concentration levels from TCLP analyses, the EAF(L) steel slag tested was classified as Type III Solid Waste. The long-term, one-dimensional (1D) swelling test results showed continued volumetric expansion even after more than 16 months of monitoring. Replacing 5-10% by weight of EAF (L) steel slag with Class C fly ash reduced the 1D swelling to negligible levels. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In those studies, similar to standard guesswork, upper and lower bounds for the rho-th moment of guessing cost are described in terms of the known measure Renyi's entropy. In this study, we non-trivially improve the known bounds using previous techniques along with new notions such as balancing cost. We have demonstrated that the novel lower bound proposed in this work, achieves 5.84%, 18.47% higher values than that of the known lower bound for rho = 1 and rho = 5, respectively. As for the upper bound, the novel expression provides 10.93%, 5.54% lower values than that of the previously presented bounds for rho = 1 and rho = 5, respectively.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 2The Influence of Social Media on Food Choices: a Bibliometric Approach(IGI Global, 2023) Köse, Şirin Gizem; Çizer, Ece ÖzerSocial media channels are increasing day by day and the time spent on social media channels has become a significant part of the day. Social media, which is one of the facts that cannot be ignored, affects food choices to a great extent, as it does in every field. Being aware of the power of social media, food companies, and groceries also develop strategies for this medium and heavily use social media as a communication tool. In line with these developments and facts, this study aims to highlight the influence of social media on food. A bibliometric study has been conducted to enlighten the literature development on social media and food subjects. The results are expected to be helpful for both literature and practice as well as social media managers and food brand managers. © 2023 by IGI Global. This school was free and open to public school students: 130 middle school students throughout Turkey attended for a 5-week period. There were 25 pre-service teachers actively involved in teaching, under the close supervision of 7 university supervisors. The entire gamut of planning, teaching and reflection sessions for each virtual class were recorded via an e-learning platform. Additionally, survey data was collected from the participating students, parents, pre-service teachers and supervisors. Our findings indicate that we were able to build a unique and virtual learning community. While pre-service teachers and middle school students benefited the most, university supervisors also reported improving their skills on when and how to give feedback. We describe how the school functioned and the range of opportunities it provided to all participants considering situated-learning perspectives and building online-learning communities. We also discuss how this model can be used in the future as a strong asset for teacher education programs and adaptation of fieldwork practices.Article Branching Out Ideas: Concept Maps Effect on Memory and L2 Writing(2018) Angelakis, Georgia MatthewThe purpose of this study was to develop a curriculum to teach visual concept mapping and improve student attitudes on writing and the quality of their examination essays. We used visual word and image connections to improve the working memory and language aptitude students and gathered a small amount of data. The study took place during the summer module of an English preparatory program and was voluntary. We developed the workshop and the methodology for students who were continuing the English preparatory program into summer school. We gave surveys and personal interviews to students and workshop instructors after the workshops to ascertain students' attitude and knowledge of the material as well as the effectiveness of the program. Research partners took notes and recordings of the workshops. End of course writing exams were referenced for quantitative data but was limited due to the workshops being voluntary. The workshops were peripheral to the course module and aimed to be as casual and accommodating to student’s heavy workload as possible while targeting specific tasks that they were responsible for in the course and final examination. Further research is needed but the limited data suggests a correlation between student’s inclusion of mind mapping techniques and their ability to complete the demands of the final exam writing rubric.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Peer Persuasion Strategies During Rule Following in 4-To 6-Year(Wiley, 2021) Kumkale, Tarcan G.; Kuntay, Aylin C.; Şen, Hilal H.Despite being a ubiquitous form of communication, persuasive communication between children received relatively scant research attention. We used a novel approach to study children's persuasive interactions in a semi-naturalistic paradigm where dyads of 4- to 6-year-old children were asked to follow a rule together. In this context, we observed (a) the frequency and types of strategies children spontaneously used to persuade their partners to abide by the rule, (b) compliance behavior following the persuasion attempt, and (c) strategy change following a failed attempt to persuade. We coded children's persuasive strategies as gentle control, negative control, and non-engagement. Children tended to use gentle control and negative control strategies to a greater extent than non-engagement strategies to prevent their partner's potential rule violation. However, after a violation occurred, children most frequently displayed non-engagement. Gentle control brought about more compliance than the other strategies. Children tended to maintain their persuasive strategy of negative control and non-engagement, even though these were mostly ineffective in achieving compliance. These results show that 4- to 6-year-old children spontaneously and flexibly utilized persuasive strategies with peers to abide by a rule.Article Citation - WoS: 44Citation - Scopus: 46Population Density Index and Its Use for Distribution of Covid-19: a Case Study Using Turkish Data(Elsevier, 2020) Başer, OnurSince March 2020, many countries around the world have been experiencing a large outbreak of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Because there is a higher rate of contact between humans in cities with higher population weighted densities, Covid-19 spreads faster in these areas. In this study, we examined the relationship between population weighted density and the spread of Covid-19. Using data from Turkey, we calculated the elasticity of Covid-19 spread with respect to population weighted density to be 0.67 after controlling for other factors. In addition to the density, the proportion of people over 65, the per capita GDP, and the number of total health care workers in each city positively contributed to the case numbers, while education level and temperature had a negative effect. We suggested a policy measure on how to transfer health care workers from different areas to the areas with a possibility of wide spread.Article Through the Lens of the Documentary the Policy of Death in Prisons(Turkish Medical Association, 2023) Özen Barkot, Z.The prison is a space where the biopower most clearly prove itself. Prisons, as a mechanism that legitimizes and implements the standards of modern power on life processes, are places that determine “disposable lives” politically, socially, and culturally and make individuals open to death, by containing the disciplinary and coercive techniques that subjugate bodies. Thus, prisons are the most obvious manifestations of the power that authorizes itself over life and death and defines itself concerning the biological field under its control, potentially working together with necropolitics. Moreover, this process is constructed not only by the physical or concrete operation of power but also by narratives that give form and content to the sovereign. At this point, this article deals with the possibility of documentary films have an important function on truth and justice from a human rights perspective by deciphering the sovereign’s narrative. Specifically, the question of how necropolitics organizes itself in prison will be discussed in the scope of Errol Morris’s film entitled Standard Operating Procedure (2008), in which he reveals the systematic dehumanization and torture in Abu Ghraib Prison by referring to the narratives of the perpetrators. © 2023, Turkish Medical Association. Article Citation - WoS: 2Commemorations of Sinan: Creating a National Hero in Turkey in the 1930s(Intellect, 2023) Sezgin, AhmetSinan (d.1588) is the most renowned architect of the Ottoman Empire. His buildings, located throughout the eastern Mediterranean, were central to a dynastic and religious architectural heritage that was inherited by a modern and secular Turkish nation state, established in 1923. This article examines how Sinan was refashioned as a national hero in the early decades of the Republic. It focuses on commemorations of Sinan and their major venue: his Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. In my analysis of these commemorations, I draw on a wide and diverse array of primary source materials, including written, photographic, artistic, and other visual materials from the 1930s and 1940s that are located in official, semi-official, and other collections. By doing so, this article reveals how the variety of nationalist approaches to Sinan and his architecture coexisted and competed.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 1From Ceremony To Spectacle: Changing Perceptions of Hagia Sophia Through the Night of Power (laylat Al-Qadr) Prayer Ceremonies(Edinburgh University Press, 2024) Uğurlu, A.H.[No abstract available]Article Muhafazakarlık, Kaygı ve Tehdit Edici Uyarıcılara Karşı Dikkat Yanlılığı(2017) Booth, Robert W; Dikçe, Uğurcan; Peker, MüjdePolitical ideology often forms an important part of someone’s identity, and affects their life in many ways. Many have studied the correlates and predictors of ideology, especially conservative ideology (e.g. Adorno, Frenkel-Brunswik, Levinson, & Sanford, 1950; Jost, Glaser, Kruglanksi, & Sulloway, 2003; Tomkins, 1963; Wilson, 1973). Psychologists and political scientists have become increasingly convinced that ideology is related to biological, physiological and cognitive factors. For example, twin studies suggest political attitudes are about 30-60% heritable (see Bouchard & McGue, 2003; Hatemi et al., 2010). Here, we focus on cognitive and associated emotional correlates of ideology.Book Part Mobile Mars Habitation(Springer International Publishing, 2023) Müge Halıcı, Süheyla; Özdemir, KürşadThis chapter focuses on the concept of mobile habitation on Mars. A description of Mars’ surface features is followed by a review of early concepts of crewed mobility for the Moon and Mars. Wheeled concepts for crew mobility continue to be based on the success of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, and predominantly take the form of a pressurized rover on wheels. With the help of architectural diagrams, the chapter introduces a range of habitable and mobile Mars structures, and the technologies used, taking into account mission requirements. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023, corrected publication 2023.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 8Social Support and Help-Seeking Worldwide(Springer, 2024) Szkody, Erica; Spence, Anjolee; Ozdogru, Asil; Tushir, Bhawna; Chang, Fennie; Akkas, Handan; Cascalheira, Cory J.; Karakulak, ArzuSocial support has long been associated with positive physical, behavioral, and mental health outcomes. However, contextual factors such as subjective social status and an individual's cultural values, heavily influence social support behaviors (e.g., perceive available social support, accept support, seek support, provide support). We sought to determine the current state of social support behaviors and the association between these behaviors, cultural values, and subjective social support across regions of the world. Data from 6,366 participants were collected by collaborators from over 50 worldwide sites (67.4% or n = 4292, assigned female at birth; average age of 30.76). Our results show that individuals cultural values and subjective social status varied across world regions and were differentially associated with social support behaviors. For example, individuals with higher subjective social status were more likely to indicate more perceived and received social support and help-seeking behaviors; they also indicated more provision of social support to others than individuals with lower subjective social status. Further, horizontal, and vertical collectivism were related to higher help-seeking behavior, perceived support, received support, and provision of support, whereas horizontal individualism was associated with less perceived support and less help-seeking and vertical individualism was associated with less perceived and received support, but more help-seeking behavior. However, these effects were not consistently moderated by region. These findings highlight and advance the understanding of how cross-cultural complexities and contextual distinctions influence an individual's perception, processing, and practice of social support embedded in the changing social landscape.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2The Mediating Role of Instructional Design and Video Length Between Grade Level and Pupil-Content Interaction in Instructional Mathematics Videos on Youtube(Springer, 2024) Demir, Ömer; Birgili, BengiThe use of instructional videos is rampant in education; however, their interaction is limited by weak instructional design. Gagne has never insisted on using his renowned 9 Events of Instruction slavishly in situations as a viable paradigm for utilization in video design. Connecting grade level, video length, and interaction, this study seeks to determine the relevance of Gagne's prescribed 9 event sequence in instructional mathematics videos. We scrutinized 50 instructional mathematics videos on YouTube geared towards middle school pupils ranging between 5th and 8th grades. We used quantitative media content analysis for video analysis. In data analysis, partial least squares were used. Bayesian estimation was also resorted to for cross checking. The data revealed that one-third of Gagne's instructional design steps were not always present: activating prior knowledge, eliciting performance, and finally providing feedback. A mediation analysis between grade level and video length revealed that 6 events fully mediated the association between the two. We also elicited the impact of these variables on affective and behavioral interactions in videos. This study assists in creating an idiosyncratic instructional design model, called Birgili's 8 steps for instructional video design, and in infusing this with a melange of four theories. In contrast with the status quo attesting that the literature abounds with scholarly works touting the shorter is the better mantra, the results substantiated that longer may be better in leveraging video interactions provided that the length is judiciously used to conform to instructional design principles.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Reconnaissance and Discussion on Ground Motion Induced by the 2023 Türkiye-Syria Earthquake(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Towhata, I.; Çağlayan, P.Ö.; Tönük, G.; Erginağ, U.C.; Sendir Torisu, S.This paper discusses the output from the damage reconnaissance conducted after the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake. First, a large landslide occurred in a limestone gentle slope without much ground water. Second, the ground subsidence in the coastal area does not comply the the local soil conditions and other observed post-seismic situations. Third, the acceleration records exhibit stronger motion with longer period and shorter duration towards the western end of the causative fault and suggest supershear rupture. To understand these features of the ground motion, this paper proposes a hypothetical model that can reproduce these observations to a good extent. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Article What Is Neuroentrepreneurship? the Theoretical Framework, Critical Evaluation, and Research Program(2021) Çakar,Tuna; Girişken, ArzuAs interest in entrepreneurship research to identify the possible economic development opportunities that entrepreneurs can provide, entrepreneurship research's objective tools are reaching their limits. Researchers in entrepreneurship are striving to discover new techniques and methodologies to answer questions about what makes a person an entrepreneur and perhaps identify and encourage an entrepreneur in the next step. Although a great deal of research has been done to answer these questions scientifically, traditional techniques have failed to produce the desired answers. For this reason, researchers working in the entrepreneurship field have recently been increasingly interested in applying neuroscience methods, especially after the proliferation of research fields such as neuroeconomics, neuromarketing, and neuropolitics. Although the population of neuroentrepreneurship research is gradually increasing, we cannot say that the field has been studied theoretically enough yet. In this article, a theoretical definition of neuroentrepreneurship is made, and a scientific framework is tried to be gained on the way to future research. Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Warning Notes in a Learner’s Dictionary: a Study of the Effectiveness of Different Formats(International Journal of Lexicography, 2022) Çakar, Tuna; Nesi, Hilary; Nural, ŞükrüThis study used an online correction task to explore the extent to which different types of warning notes in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online were heeded when users tried to correct errors in the use of L2 target words. The task was completed by 332 participants, yielding 1,819 answers produced after clicking on links to relevant entries. Warning notes were categorised in terms of their formatting features, but there were found to be inconsistencies in the way the dictionary associated different categories with different kinds of learner error. Participants judged warning notes with more visual enhancements to be more useful, but in the correction task the position of the warning notes also seemed to affect the degree to which the warnings were successfully applied. Different types of warning notes in learners’ dictionaries have not been examined previously in any depth, and the results suggest that some adjustments to formatting and placement might make them more effective.
