1441. Quantification of the Flow Noise in Household Refrigerators

The flow noise in household refrigerators is quantified in this study. First, the sound pressure measurements in a quiet room using typical household refrigerators are conducted and the noise characteristics of the refrigerators are presented. Then, the flow noise in household refrigerators is quantified using the results of the overall analysis and Fourier transform of the measured sound pressure data. After that, the flow noise in household refrigerators is quantified using the sound pressure measurements conducted using a specially designed test rig. The frequency characteristics of the flow noise in household refrigerators are also explored and the contribution of the flow noise is identified.

Thus, this conference was organized to address the state-of-the-art technology for the benefit of researchers and users, and this time the conference made a special focus on the topic: Sustainable Mechatronics Technology.

18 - Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Biofibers and Their Composites

In this study, the acoustic and mechanical properties of many biofibers and their composites are presented. First, the sound absorption coefficients and transmission losses of commonly used natural fibers and their composites are presented, by clearly reporting the thickness of the samples, for three different frequency ranges (<500 Hz: low, 500–2000 Hz: medium, and >2000 Hz: high). In addition, the sound absorption coefficients (for low- and medium-frequency ranges) and noise reduction coefficients of some 40-cm-thick samples are overlaid in order to directly compare their performances. Second, the physical properties, such as the density, diameter, and length of biofibers, and mechanical properties, such as the damping (or loss factor) and Young’s modulus of biofibers and their composites, are presented in detail. For comparison purposes, the acoustic and mechanical properties of some conventional materials, such as carbon and glass fibers, are included in the tables and figures. Finally, the effects of some parameters, such as pretreatment, fiber diameter, fiber/matrix ratio, moisture content, manufacturing and machining parameters/techniques, and measurement conditions/methods, on the acoustic and mechanical properties of natural materials are presented. Furthermore, current applications and potential usage areas of natural fibers are briefly discussed.

19 - Identification of the Elastic and Damping Properties of Jute and Luffa Fiber-Reinforced Biocomposites

Although there are many studies in the literature on the static mechanical properties of biomaterials such as tensile strength, the dynamic mechanical properties of biomaterials such as modal loss factors have not been investigated in detail. In this study, the Young’s moduli and damping (or loss factors) of some jute and luffa fiber-reinforced biocomposites are investigated. The effects of fiber/resin ratio and thickness on the mechanical properties of the jute and luffa composites are identified via an experimental approach. For this purpose, acoustic and structural frequency response functions of some homogeneous and hybrid jute and luffa composite plates with different fiber/resin ratios and thicknesses are measured. By analyzing the measured frequency response functions using the circle-fit method, the modal frequencies and loss factors of the homogeneous and hybrid composite plates are determined. By assuming that the homogeneous plates are isotropic, the same plates are modeled using the finite element method, and by comparing the experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the elastic properties of the homogeneous plates are determined. In addition, the same homogeneous plates are modeled by considering an anisotropic material model, and the associated material properties are determined. By using the identified material properties, the finite element models of the hybrid composite plates are developed, and by comparing their experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the identified elastic material properties are evaluated and validated.

Uluslararası ilişkilerde askeri gücün kullanılması ve askeri gücü kullanırken kullanılan meşruiyet gerekçeleri arasında siyasi, ekonomik, güvenlik gerekçelerinin yanında dinin de etkisi olmuştur. Bu makalede 9/11 terör saldırısı başta olmak üzere El Kaide adlı devlet dışı aktörün istismar ettiği kutsal savaş kavramının dini bir inşa olup olmadığı, İslam dini kapsamında bu inşanın ne kadar geçerlilik taşıdığı ve ABD’nin bu mücadeleyi hangi dini söylemlerle karşıladığı literatür taraması yöntemi ile analiz edilmektedir. Ayrıca, İslamiyet’in savaş ve cihat yaklaşımı da Kuran’da yer alan bazı ayetler ile ortaya konulmaktadır. Savaş hakkındaki Kuran’daki ilgili ayetler incelendiğinde öncelikle barışın en ideal durum olduğu, savaşmak isteyen gruplar olduğunda öncelikle arabuluculuk yapılması, savaş ve terörizm ateşinin söndürülmesi önemli buyruk ve tavsiyeler arasında yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmada 9/11 terör saldırısı sonucu ABD ve Avrupa’da oluşan suni İslam karşıtlığının ne kadar büyük bir haksızlık yarattığının ortaya konularak çatışmaların çözülmesi ve evrensel barışa katkı sağlanması amaçlanmıştır.

2D Modeling Temperature Development of Mass Concrete Structures at Early Age

In this paper, a 2D finite volume analysis methodology was used to predict temperature development within three different bridge pier caps. MATLAB® was employed to generate a program that solves the governing heat transfer equation where development of thermo-physical concrete properties was defined as a function of degree of hydration. The rate of heat generation was obtained experimentally via adiabatic calorimetry and the activation energy was determined following the ASTM C 1074 procedure to implement equivalent age concept. 2D finite volume analysis results were presented in comparison with the recorded concrete temperatures from the field. Accordingly, temperature time histories at the center and the side surface of the bridge pier caps were predicted reasonably well using the concrete mixture information and the measured concrete hydration properties. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

A 32-Society Investigation of the Influence of Perceived Economic Inequality on Social Class Stereotyping

There is a growing body of work suggesting that social class stereotypes are amplified when people perceive higher levels of economic inequality—that is, the wealthy are perceived as more competent and assertive and the poor as more incompetent and unassertive. The present study tested this prediction in 32 societies and also examines the role of wealth-based categorization in explaining this relationship. We found that people who perceived higher economic inequality were indeed more likely to consider wealth as a meaningful basis for categorization. Unexpectedly, however, higher levels of perceived inequality were associated with perceiving the wealthy as less competent and assertive and the poor as more competent and assertive. Unpacking this further, exploratory analyses showed that the observed tendency to stereotype the wealthy negatively only emerged in societies with lower social mobility and democracy and higher corruption. This points to the importance of understanding how socio-structural features that co-occur with economic inequality may shape perceptions of the wealthy and the poor. © 2022 The Authors. A Bayesian Allocation Model Based Approach To Mixed Membership Stochastic Blockmodels

Although detecting communities in networks has attracted considerable recent attention, estimating the number of communities is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose a model, which replicates the generative process of the mixed-membership stochastic block model (MMSB) within the generic allocation framework of Bayesian allocation model (BAM) and BAM-MMSB. In contrast to traditional blockmodels, BAM-MMSB considers the observations as Poisson counts generated by a base Poisson process and marks according to the generative process of MMSB. Moreover, the optimal number of communities for BAM-MMSB is estimated by computing the variational approximations of the marginal likelihood for each model order. Experiments on synthetic and real data sets show that the proposed approach promises a generalized model selection solution that can choose not only the model size but also the most appropriate decomposition.

A Benchmark Dataset for Turkish Data-To Generation

In the last decades, data-to-text (D2T) systems that directly learn from data have gained a lot of attention in natural language generation. These systems need data with high quality and large volume, but unfortunately some natural languages suffer from the lack of readily available generation datasets. This article describes our efforts to create a new Turkish dataset (Tr-D2T) that consists of meaning representation and reference sentence pairs without fine-grained word alignments. We utilize Turkish web resources and existing datasets in other languages for producing meaning representations and collect reference sentences by crowdsourcing native speakers. We particularly focus on the generation of single-sentence biographies and dining venue descriptions. In order to motivate future Turkish D2T studies, we present detailed benchmarking results of different sequence-to-sequence neural models trained on this dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first of its kind that provides preliminary findings and lessons learned from the creation of a new Turkish D2T dataset. Moreover, our work is the first extensive study that presents generation performances of transformer and recurrent neural network models from meaning representations in this morphologically-rich language.
A Bi-Objective Traffic Signal Optimization Model for Mixed Traffic Concerning Pedestrian Delays

Urban traffic networks suffer in numerous ways from traffic congestion. Some of these adverse effects are increased travel times of cars, buses, bicycle users, pedestrians etc., with the addition of excessive greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation engineers and policy makers try to improve the quality of urban transportation systems by developing projects to enhance the pedestrian experience, reduce private car usage, reduce total time spent in the network through different control strategies, and diminish the detrimental effects. In this context, this study takes Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and pedestrians into account at signal-controlled intersections. A novel intersection signal control optimization methodology that incorporates pedestrian delays and vehicular emissions from CAVs is presented. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II is utilized to solve the multiobjective optimization problem. For the emission calculations, the MOVES3 emission model is utilized. The proposed framework is tested on real-world case study. Simulation experiments showed major improvements in pedestrian delays and lower emissions. © 2024 The Authors. Published by ELSEVIER B.V.
A Bibliometric Analysis of Greenwashing and Firm Value

Purpose – Greenwashing, traditionally a marketing concept, has gained increasing relevance in economics, finance, accounting, and law. As a result, bibliometric analyses on greenwashing have attracted growing scholarly interest. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the literature on greenwashing and firm value, identifying key trends, productive countries, institutions, influential authors, and collaborative networks while examining the relationship between greenwashing and firm value. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from the Web of Science (WoS) database through systematic searches. The analysis includes 473 publications from 2003 to 2024 in disciplines such as environmental sciences, business, management, finance, communication, and ethics. Among these, 170 studies explicitly address both greenwashing and firm value. Results – The findings indicate a substantial increase in research output, particularly after 2020, with nearly 50 publications per year by 2023. Sustainability, performance evaluation, and transparency emerge as dominant themes. While China leads in research output, European countries exhibit higher collaboration rates. Influential authors, such as Li W and Zhang D, and leading journals, including the Journal of Business Ethics, have significantly shaped the field. Thematic developments indicate a shift from management-centered discussions to a stronger emphasis on sustainability and financial performance. Discussion – The study provides theoretical and practical insights into the impact of greenwashing on firm value, offering implications for managers, stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers. While greenwashing remains a relatively new research area, its scholarly attention is expanding rapidly. This study contributes by examining both greenwashing and its financial implications, particularly how stakeholders perceive greenwashing and its effects on firm value.
A Bibliometric Analysis on The Development of The Second-Hand Market Literature Over the Last 30 Years

Hem araştırmacılar hem de uygulayıcılar tarafında, ikinci el ürünlere artan bir ilgi bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle bu çalışma, konuyla ilgili literatür gelişimine ışık tutmak için literatürdeki ikinci el pazarının gelişimini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda literatürde ikinci el pazarı kavramı üzerine geçmişten günümüze yapılan çalışmalar üzerinden bibliyometrik bir analiz yapılmıştır. Çalışma için toplam 235 doküman incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar ikinci el tüketimin yeni bir tüketici davranışı türü olarak ortaya çıktığını ve daha sonra literatürde bir iş modeli olarak incelendiğini ve sürdürülebilirliğin hem akademik hem de uygulama alanlarında artan önemi ile birlikte hatırı sayılır bir tüketim şekli haline geldiğini göstermektedir. İkinci el ürünler stil ve sürdürülebilirlik yönünü daha fazla vurgulayan önemli bir pazar yaratmıştır. İkinci el üzerine yapılan çalışmalarda en sık tekrarlanan terim döngüsel ekonomidir. İkinci el giyim, işbirlikçi tüketim, paylaşım ekonomisi ve yeniden kullanım konularında yapılan çalışmalar son yıllarda artış göstermiştir Sonuçların hem literatüre hem de ikinci el perakendecilerine katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.

A Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem With Stochastic Setup Times and Overtime

In this paper, we study a Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem with Stochastic Setup Times and Overtime (CLSPSSTO). We describe a mathematical model that considers both regular costs (including production, setup and inventory holding costs) and expected overtime costs (related to the excess usage of capacity). The CLSP-SSTO is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming problem. A procedure is proposed to exactly compute the expected overtime for a given setup and production plan when the setup times follow a Gamma distribution. A sample average approximation procedure is applied to obtain upper bounds and a statistical lower bound. This is then used to benchmark the performance of two additional heuristics. A first heuristic is based on changing the capacity in the deterministic counterpart, while the second heuristic artificially modifies the setup time. We conduct our computational experiments on well-known problem instances and provide comprehensive analyses to evaluate the performance of each heuristic. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Comparative Analysis on the Relationship Between Institutional Environment and Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies

Institutional environment plays an important role in the quality and nature of entrepreneurial activities and the development of entrepreneurship ecosystem. The aim of this research is to evaluate institutional factors of selected emerging markets with Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index data. Findings of the study indicate that Turkey has one of the lowest scores among other emerging markets for the institutional variable of staff training and also has comparably low scores in venture capital, business strategy, and technology transfer. Results of the study show that except South Korea, all the selected economies have scored low on the institutional variable of gross domestic expenditure on research and development as a percentage of the gross domestic product. The study is expected to make valuable contributions to the literature with its novel approach of using comparative Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index scores for analyzing the institutional environment and entrepreneurship relationship in emerging economies.

A Comprehensive Review of the Novel Weighting Methods for Multi-Criteria Decision-Making

In the realm of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems, the selection of a weighting method holds a critical role. Researchers from diverse fields have consistently employed MCDM techniques, utilizing both traditional and novel methods to enhance the discipline. Acknowledging the significance of staying abreast of such methodological developments, this study endeavors to contribute to the field through a comprehensive review of several novel weighting-based methods: CILOS, IDOCRIW, FUCOM, LBWA, SAPEVO-M, and MEREC. Each method is scrutinized in terms of its characteristics and steps while also drawing upon publications extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. Through bibliometric and content analyses, this study delves into the trend, research components (sources, authors, countries, and affiliations), application areas, fuzzy implementations, hybrid studies (use of other weighting and/or ranking methods), and application tools for these methods. The findings of this review offer an insightful portrayal of the applications of each novel weighting method, thereby contributing valuable knowledge for researchers and practitioners within the field of MCDM.

A Configurational Analysis of the Impact of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Global Mindset on Export Performance of Smes

Although contemporary literature provides several important insights into the role of attributes of SMEs, there is much less evidence on what configuration of entrepreneurial orientation and global mindset makes this process successful, that is, contributing to the export performance of SMEs. This study uses a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis on a sample of 97 SMEs in Ghana to explore the potential complementary role between the entrepreneurial orientation dimensions and global mindset for superior export performance. The results indicate two different yet equifinal configurations of these factors that lead to a high level of export performance of SMEs. One of the configurations shows that proactive and innovative SMEs with managers high on global mindset achieve superior export performance regardless of their willingness to take risks. Another configuration indicates that regardless of the global mindset of managers, SMEs can achieve higher export performance by being proactive, innovative, and willing to take high risks. Several implications for theory and practice are discussed based on the findings. © The Author(s) 2024.

A Data-Assisted Reliability Model for Carrier-Assisted Cold Data Storage Systems

Cold data storage systems are used to allow long term digital preservation for institutions’ archive. The common functionality among cold and warm/hot data storage is that the data is stored on some physical medium for read-back at a later time. However in cold storage, write and read operations are not necessarily done in the same exact geographical location. Hence, a third party assistance is typically utilized to bring together the medium and the drive. On the other hand, the reliability modeling of such a decomposed system poses few challenges that do not necessarily exist in other warm/hot storage alternatives such as fault detection and absence of the carrier, all totaling up to the data unavailability issues. In this paper, we propose a generalized non-homogenous Markov model that encompasses the aging of the carriers in order to address the requirements of today's cold data storage systems in which the data is encoded and spread across multiple nodes for the long-term data retention. We have derived useful lower/upper bounds on the overall system availability. Furthermore, the collected field data is used to estimate parameters of a Weibull distribution to accurately predict the lifetime of the carriers in an example scale-out setting.
