Editorial 17th International Conference on Mechatronics Technology, October 15-18, 2013, Jeju Island, Korea(Elsevier, 2015) Hwang, Sung Ho; Kim, Joon-wan; Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgeIn recent years, Mechatronics has gained a lot of interest as more applications have been introduced to industry and society. The need for new mechatronic technologies in the form of advanced production systems, mechatronic devices, control systems, robotics, biomedical applications, MEMS, and measurement systems, among others, is very much required in improving productivity and competitiveness in many industries. Thus, this conference was organized to address the state-of-the-art technology for the benefit of researchers and users, and this time the conference made a special focus on the topic: Sustainable Mechatronics Technology.Conference Object A Business Model Frame for Innovative Startups - (july 11-15, 2017)(Global Business & Technology Association, 2017) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgeCurrent business model frames such as the Business Model Canvas and the Lean Canvas do not address aspects of open innovation, problem statement, innovative problem solving, business metrics and disruptive strategies; therefore, a novel business model frame is introduced to cover these aspects. This new model is based on a combination of key principles of the theory of inventive problem solving applied to business and management, such as multi-screen analysis of value-conflict mapping, trends of ideality of business system evolution positioning, among others; but also, intellectual property, disruptive strategies, and open innovation, as well as startup metrics to describe the business differentiation and attractiveness to potential investors, incubators and accelerators. The entrepreneur designing his/her own startup should be able to justify if not all, most of the items to be able to demonstrate the idea strengths. And regarding both building blocks “Product Formulation and Inventive Problem Solving” and “Disruption Strategy”, certain training should be necessary.Article A Novel Business Model Frame for Innovative Startups – (Article)(2017) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgePurpose- This paper presents a novel business model frame that is meant to explicitly include several approaches of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, disruptive strategies, business metrics, problem statement and opportunity formulation, as well as improvements on the profit formula. Methodology- The analysis first addresses the business model canvas, sketching and framing key points behind the development of startups. The analysis on existing business models covers the firm’s value proposition, partners, resources, activities, customer relationships, distribution channels, customers, revenue streams and cost structure. When it comes to innovative startups, the author emphasizes that existing template do not explicitly include innovation measures, no problem/opportunity formulation, intellectual property, or even basic business model concepts as the profit formula. Hence, an innovative frame is developed primarily using the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving technique applied to business and management such as multi-screen analysis of value-conflict mapping, trends of ideality of business system evolution positioning, among others; but also, intellectual property, disruptive strategies, and open innovation, as well as startup metrics. Findings- A novel frame is proposed, providing general guidelines for each of the sections. Any entrepreneur designing his/her own startup should be able to justify, if not all, most of the items to be able to demonstrate the idea strengths. Regarding the specific building blocks: “Product Formulation and Inventive Problem Solving” and “Disruption Strategy”, certain short training should be necessary. Conclusion- The proposed business model frame visually and concisely sketches, besides accurately stating traditional business concepts, the key innovation concepts that any startup should integrate to be a game-changer in a competitive market. The developed frame is a helpful mapping and evaluation tool to accurately describe the business differentiation and innovation attractiveness to potential investors, incubators and accelerators.Conference Object A Novel Business Model Frame for Innovative Startups - (may 12-14, 2017)(World Conference on Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 2017) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgeThe business model canvas has been used in business and entrepreneurship to sketch and frame the key points behind the development of a startup, and it was meant to strategically analyze and develop startups or documenting existing businesses. The business model canvas describes the firm’s value proposition, partners, resources, activities, customer relationships, distribution channels, customers, revenue streams and cost structure. However, when it comes to innovative startups, this template does not explicitly include innovation measures, no problem/opportunity formulation, or even such a basic component of a business model, as the profit formula. The present paper proposes a novel business model frame to visually and concisely sketch, besides accurately state traditional business concepts, key innovation concepts that any startup should integrate to be a game-changer in a competitive market. This new model is based on a combination of key principles of the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) applied to business and management, such as multi-screen analysis of value-conflict mapping, trends of ideality of business system evolution positioning, among others; but also intellectual property, disruptive strategies, and open innovation, as well as startup metrics to describe the business differentiation and attractiveness to potential investors, incubators and accelerators.Conference Object A Novel Standard for Graphical Representation of Mental Models and Processes in Cognitive Sciences(World Congress of Education, 2018) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; McKeown, John A.G.Cognitive Science has positioned itself to be a common ground in which models of mental processes from multiple disciplines merge, situating itself as a common field for new learning theories, or for formalizing existing ones. However, the authors have identified a need for updating the existing graphical representations by incorporating more accessible understanding for teachers and researchers in cross- multidisciplinary fields. In this regard, the present investigation attempts to generate a standard graphical language to represent complex mental processes by the introduction of functional principles, schemes and models that have been successfully used in technical areas such as adaptive control systems, algorithm flow charts, and artificial intelligence. This graphical representation, entitled “Cognitive Functional Representation” (CFR), is further shown to be efficacious in incorporating the essence of complex cognitive theories.Conference Object Advances on Laser-Generated Surface Acoustic Wave-Based Characterization of Thin Films and Skin Tissues(2016) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge...Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 13Calibration of the Effective Spring Constant of Ultra-Short Cantilevers for a High-Speed Atomic Force Microscope(2015) Xu, Lin-Yan; Wu, Sen; Hu, Xiao-Dong; Song, Yun-Peng; Fu, Xing; Zhang, Jun-Ming; Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgeUltra-short cantilevers are a new type of cantilever designed for the next generation of high-speed atomic force microscope (HS-AFM). Ultra-short cantilevers have smaller dimensions and higher resonant frequency than conventional AFM cantilevers. Moreover, their geometry may also be different from the conventional beam-shape or V-shape. These changes increase the difficulty of determining the spring constant for ultra-short cantilevers, and hence limit the accuracy and precision of force measurement based on a HS-AFM. This paper presents an experimental method to calibrate the effective spring constant of ultra-short cantilevers. By using a home-made AFM head, the cantilever is bent against an electromagnetic compensation balance under servo control. Meanwhile the bending force and the cantilever deflection are synchronously measured by the balance and the optical lever in the AFM head, respectively. Then the effective spring constant is simply determined as the ratio of the force to the corresponding deflection. Four ultra-short trapezoid shape cantilevers were calibrated using this method. A quantitative uncertainty analysis showed that the combined relative standard uncertainty of the calibration result is less than 2%, which is better than the uncertainty of any previously reported techniques.Conference Object Improved Business Model Representation of Innovation Concepts(World Conference on Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 2015) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; Küçükaydın, Hande; Özlem, Şirin; Bulgan, Gökçe; Aydın, Utkun; Son Turan, Semen; Karamollaoğlu, Nazlı; Teixeira, Frederico FialhoExcept for academics and consultants, the concept and purpose of innovation (not to mention related concepts such as “Open Innovation", "Free-Intellectual Property Innovation," or "Open Source Innovation") is usually unclear for most entrepreneurs and other practitioners. It often times happens that newly coined terminology becomes misleading or may even include a certain degree of sensationalism, hence turning into a matter of debate for specialists in the realm of technology management. Such has been the case for the term “Open Innovation”, since the word “open” is mainly related to crowd sourced innovation, but not for the openness on intellectual property rights. Since innovation is about the commercialization of original ideas, so we propose a simple and visual business model setting to resolve these concepts. To this regard, the “Business Model Canvas” has been used in business and entrepreneurship to sketch and frame the key points behind the development of a startup. This model was suggested by Alexander Osterwalder (2008) in his work on Business Model Ontology, as a strategic analysis template for developing startups or documenting existing businesses. It describes the firm’s value proposition, partners, resources, activities, customer relationships, distribution channels, customers, revenue streams and cost structure. However, when it comes to innovative startups, this template does not explicitly include such significant innovation components as intellectual property, its alignment to strategies, and intellectual property flow. The present paper proposes the use of an improved version of the Business Model Canvas to originally represent different models of innovation like Open Innovation, thus providing a clear, visual and quick representation of their meaning, and consequently, contribute to a better understanding of different concepts of innovation.Conference Object Laser-Generated Surface Acoustic Wave-Based Study and Detection of Surface Cracks(Int. Sc. & Tech. Conf. Beam technologies & Laser Applications, 2015) Chen, Kun; Fu, Xing; Li, Tingting; Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; Li, Yanning; Wu, SenMonitoring cracks to check the integrity of engineering materials by Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) in industry is significant in industry. And within the NDT techniques, Laser-Generated Surface Acoustic Wave technique (LSAW) has shown to be a promising technique. To further develop non-contact and accurate testing strengths of this method, models for analyzing the generation, propagation and tracking of surface acoustic waves (SAW’s) changes in S45C steel samples with distributed cracks are developed by using Finite Element Method (FEM). Time and frequency domain analyses are used to process the acoustic wave signals after the interaction with cracks. The simulation results and preliminary analyses reveal the good potential LSAW’s have to monitor cracks. First results in developing an experimental setup for crack detection are also provided.Research Project Mechanical Design and Fluid Analysis of a Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine "tribine"(MEF Üniversitesi, 2018) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; Khavidaki, Ehsan LayeghPurpose of the final project is to design a wind turbine with an artistic view, choose proper wind turbine axis and comparison of them. To this regard, Laser-induced Surface Acoustic Wave (LSAW) technology, with its accurate, non-invasive and rapid testing characteristics, has recently shown promising results in biological and biomedical tissues. In order to improve the measurement accuracy and efficiency of detecting important features in highly opaque and soft surfaces such as human skin, this paper identifies the most important parameters of a pulse laser source, as well as provides practical guidelines to recommended proper ranges to generate Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWS) for characterization purposes. Considering that melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer, we conducted a finite element simulation-based research on the generation and propagation of surface waves in human skin containing a melanoma-like feature, determine best pulse laser parameter ranges of variation, simulation mesh size and time step, working bandwidth, and minimal size of detectable melanoma.Conference Object Study of Tuned Mass Damper for Attenuating Skyscraper Oscillations Through Project-Based Learning(Filodiritto Publisher, 2019) Şengül, Özden; Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante JorgeThe intention of the project was to introduce a complex real-life engineering problem in an easy manner to sophomore students, namely, the topic of a tuned mass damper (TMD). Even though TMD is a multiple-degree-of-freedom vibration problem seen only in advanced university courses, the phenomenon of earthquake effects on buildings is easy to understand. In order to ease the complexity, the multi-degree-of-freedom mathematical problem was converted into a single degree of freedom, such as the behavior of a vertical single-mass cantilever beam. Through a do-it-yourself project to be done in home conditions, students are introduced to the topic of mechanical vibrations via seismic action on tall buildings. Two sections of the "Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics" course, with an overall number of 58 students, participated in the project. The project develops critical thinking and inquiry skills by designing and constructing the physical prototype of a building-like structure and its corresponding tuned mass damper; conducting an experiment under certain restrictions to test the stabilizing effect of the damper after an initial displacement; learning a proper software application to graph and measure underdamped oscillations; calculating corresponding vibration parameters; as well as analyzing and discussing experimental results. Students approach the problem of mass-damper tuning by means of trial and error, an on-purpose strategy to add fun and gambling to the process, to enthusiastically compete for the best performance in terms of efficiency of attenuation. Data were collected from direct observation, surveys, reports and presentations. The results showed that students positively and enthusiastically responded at all project stages and with a better understanding of the phenomenon and engagement in comparison with previous students of the same course without project. The impact of the project on students’ engagement and implications for engineering education are discussed.Article Technology of Mental Functional Representations as a First Stage of Conceptualization and Implementation of Complex Scientific Knowledge in Innovation Processes(Transfer-Innovations, 2019) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; Balsa-Yepes, AldrinIn innovation processes, it is common to deal with highly cross-multidisciplinary topics. For example, an innovation process may integrate psychological, neuroscientific, biological and engineering disciplines, among many others dealing with bio-cybernetic systems. One specific type of those theories is related to cognitive processes, knowledge representation, and self-learning systems. Therefore, there is a need to easily and rapidly understand, as well as apply and share knowledge of complex theories by innovation managers, engineers, scholars, training practitioners, computational modelers, managers, and stakeholders, among others. In this regard, the present article provides with a graphical tool to represent complex cross- multidisciplinary theories, concepts and processes in a simple, concise, and logical manner, by using functional principles and graphical representations that have been successfully used in engineering and technology areas such as adaptive control systems, algorithmic flow charts, and computational cognitive neuroscience. Once described the models that have been typically used to represent and model knowledge and cognition, functional cognitive modeling is introduced, and then applied to represent and model complex cognitive theories from psychology and neuroscience such as Jean Piaget’s Theory of Intellectual Growth, Antonio Damasio’s Somatic Marker Hypothesis, and Dante Dorantes’ Soft Skills Model.Research Project Tri̇bi̇ne Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Efficiency Analysis(TÜBİTAK, 2019) Dorantes-Gonzalez, Dante Jorge; Layegh Khavidaki, Seyed EhsanProje konusu, savonius tip dikey eksenli rüzgar türbini verim kıyaslamasıdır.
