Article A Bibliometric Analysis of Greenwashing and Firm Value(2025) Öz, Merve; Alagöz, Hilal Merve; Menderes, Cansu KorkmazPurpose – Greenwashing, traditionally a marketing concept, has gained increasing relevance in economics, finance, accounting, and law. As a result, bibliometric analyses on greenwashing have attracted growing scholarly interest. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the literature on greenwashing and firm value, identifying key trends, productive countries, institutions, influential authors, and collaborative networks while examining the relationship between greenwashing and firm value. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from the Web of Science (WoS) database through systematic searches. The analysis includes 473 publications from 2003 to 2024 in disciplines such as environmental sciences, business, management, finance, communication, and ethics. Among these, 170 studies explicitly address both greenwashing and firm value. Results – The findings indicate a substantial increase in research output, particularly after 2020, with nearly 50 publications per year by 2023. Sustainability, performance evaluation, and transparency emerge as dominant themes. While China leads in research output, European countries exhibit higher collaboration rates. Influential authors, such as Li W and Zhang D, and leading journals, including the Journal of Business Ethics, have significantly shaped the field. Thematic developments indicate a shift from management-centered discussions to a stronger emphasis on sustainability and financial performance. Discussion – The study provides theoretical and practical insights into the impact of greenwashing on firm value, offering implications for managers, stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers. While greenwashing remains a relatively new research area, its scholarly attention is expanding rapidly. This study contributes by examining both greenwashing and its financial implications, particularly how stakeholders perceive greenwashing and its effects on firm value.Article A Bibliometric Analysis on The Development of The Second-Hand Market Literature Over the Last 30 Years(2024) Çizer, Ece Özer; Köse, Şirin GizemHem araştırmacılar hem de uygulayıcılar tarafında, ikinci el ürünlere artan bir ilgi bulunmaktadır. The aim of this research is to evaluate institutional factors of selected emerging markets with Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index data. Findings of the study indicate that Turkey has one of the lowest scores among other emerging markets for the institutional variable of staff training and also has comparably low scores in venture capital, business strategy, and technology transfer. Results of the study show that except South Korea, all the selected economies have scored low on the institutional variable of gross domestic expenditure on research and development as a percentage of the gross domestic product. The study is expected to make valuable contributions to the literature with its novel approach of using comparative Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index scores for analyzing the institutional environment and entrepreneurship relationship in emerging economies.Article An Analytic Look at a Language Course Design Model(2017) Mutlu, Gülçin; Ece SarıgülThis study aims to qualitatively examine and elaborate on the characteristics of the course design model devised by Graves (2000). Drawing upon the traditional components and principals of instructional design, Graves' course design model is innovative or different in that it has been more specially developed for language course design purposes and thus is believed to be more suited to the nature of language courses with its consideration of the main elements or characteristics of language teaching and learning processes. This descriptive study centers upon the seven main examination criteria, which are in fact the main procedures as suggested by Graves (2000). These are a) defining context, b) conceptualizing content, c) organizing the course, d) formulating goals and objectives, e) assessing needs, f) developing materials and finally g) designing an assessment plan. In this essence, each criterion was first introduced and explained in detail before the researchers extend their critical outlook into the functionality and practical use of the relevant steps and strategies recommended by Graves (2000). This critical analysis and review on the Graves' course design model revealed that the model employs the traditional components of the ADDIE generic and lends itself well also to be used in the other disciplines other than foreign languages. The final part of this report will provide suggestions as regards the potential application of the model specifically in English language curriculum development and more broadly in the curriculum and course development procedures pertaining to other discipline areas.Article Are inflation expectations irrational in Turkey? Exchange rate pass-through analysis(Journal of Financial Politic & Economic Reviews, 2023) Asfuroglu, Dila; Ertuğrul, Ayşe; Güneş, Gökhan ŞahinAre inflation expectations irrational in Turkey? Exchange rate pass-through analysisThis study investigates the rationality of inflation expectations in Turkey over 2011-2019 via exchange rate pass-through (ERPT) analysis. Relying on the assumption that the inflation rate and inflation expectations are going to change equally if the economic agents form rational expectations, we utilize the vector autoregression model with inflation expectations to quantify the ERPT to inflation and to inflation expectations. The results show that exchange rate shocks do not have the same impact on the inflation rate and inflation expectations over different horizons. In the short term, the inflation rate rises faster than the inflation expectations following unexpected exchange rate swings; however, they move in tandem after six months. With the time-varying analysis, we trace the evolution of the ERPT coefficients to characterize the nature of agents’ expectations. The findings document that the discrepancy between ERPT coefficients is persistent, inclining to chronic irrationality of expectations, with decaying degrees in the longer horizon, rendering adaptive formation of expectations over time.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Assessment of the Disaster Recovery Progress Through Mathematical Modelling(TMMOB İnşaat Mühendisleri Odası, 2020) Dikmen, Seyyit Ümit; Sönmez, Murat; Akbıyıklı, RıfatNatural disasters, especially major earthquakes, cause widespread devastation in the built environment. Hence, the major component of the recovery in its aftermath constitutes a chain of projects starting at different times, having different costs and durations. In this study, the post disaster recovery curve modelled through a mathematical approach taking into account these properties of the projects. The approach followed is based on the project S-curve concept that provides the opportunity to simulate the progress by outlining the project spending. Well-known mathematical functions are adapted to model the project spending and the handover processes. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to evaluate the general behavior of the recovery curve using the model developed. Weibull distribution is used to generate the model’s parameters. Results of the Monte Carlo simulation demonstrate that the recovery process exhibits an S-shape, the duration of initial portion and the slope of the bulk portion being significantly governed by the level of preparedness of the community.Article Awareness of Misconceptions in Science and Mathematics Education: Perceptions and Experiences of Pre-Service Teachers(Ahi Evran Üniversitesi, 2017) Birgili, Bengi; Mesutoğlu, CananThis study aimed to reveal elementary science and mathematics pre-service teachers’ perceptions and experiences on misconceptions. To what extent pre-service teachers are aware of students’ misconceptions, and what they experienced about identifying and working with misconceptions were of interest for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 pre-service teachers from elementary science education and mathematics education programs. The results revealed that pre-service teachers had awareness on nature of misconceptions while having difficulties in providing more concise definitions of misconceptions. The misconceptions were mostly realized while giving additional examples compared to students’ explanation during teaching learning process. Another finding showed pre-service teachers believed that misconceptions might lead to academic underachievement, can have impact on other topics, can create negative symptoms of psychology, and classroom management problems. The findings were further structured into a SWOT analysis framework that can help future researchers.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Between a Rock and a Hard Place: How To Make Sense of Turkey’s S-400 Choice(SETA Foundation, 2020) Kibaroğlu, MustafaWith the wrap-up of the S-400 deal with Russia in December 2017, critics argue that Turkey is caught between a rock and a hard place due to the adamant opposition of its NATO allies, the United States in particular, which has threatened Ankara with imposing severe sanctions. Would this be the correct representation of the situation at hand? Does it make any sense for Turkey to engage Russia, an archrival nation, to enhance the security of the country? Is the S-400 deal worth the risk of alienating the allied nations whose projected sanctions may have wide-ranging political, economic and military repercussions? With these questions in mind, this paper will try to shed light on the specifics of the S-400 deal that make one think that it may indeed make sense for Turkey to bear the brunt of engaging Russia. In the same vein, the paper will assess the impact of the S-400 deal on Turkey’s defense industries. The paper will also present the author’s conception of the current “international political non-order” as an underlying factor behind the deal. Finally, the paper will suggest that the S-400 deal must be approached from a wider perspective so as to grasp the extent of the service it has done in bolstering Turkey’s military-industrial complex. © 2020, SETA Foundation. We used visual word and image connections to improve the working memory and language aptitude students and gathered a small amount of data. The study took place during the summer module of an English preparatory program and was voluntary. We developed the workshop and the methodology for students who were continuing the English preparatory program into summer school. We gave surveys and personal interviews to students and workshop instructors after the workshops to ascertain students' attitude and knowledge of the material as well as the effectiveness of the program. Research partners took notes and recordings of the workshops. End of course writing exams were referenced for quantitative data but was limited due to the workshops being voluntary. The workshops were peripheral to the course module and aimed to be as casual and accommodating to student’s heavy workload as possible while targeting specific tasks that they were responsible for in the course and final examination. Further research is needed but the limited data suggests a correlation between student’s inclusion of mind mapping techniques and their ability to complete the demands of the final exam writing rubric.Article Calling for a Reset in Turkish-American Relations in the Post-COVID International Order(SETA Foundation, 2020) Kibaroğlu, MustafaAnalysts emphasize that nothing will be the same after the pandemic and refer to the ‘new normal’ that is likely to prevail everywhere in the world. It would be a legitimate question to ask if this would provide a conducive environment for Turkey and the United States to reset their relations that have much deteriorated lately. This article will, first, highlight the contours of the ‘new normal’ narrative by referring to the views expressed by politicians, academics, analysts, journalists and intellectuals from around the world. Second, the article will assess the implications of the parameters of the ‘new normal’ for key actors in world politics, such as the United States, China, the European Union and Russia, as well as Turkey’s Middle Eastern neighbors, with respect to the issues that will be at stake in the international security environment. Finally, the article will make a call for a reset in Turkish-American relations in order for the two long-standing allies to adapt themselves better to post-COVID international politics. © 2020, SETA Foundation. Hence, this paper aims to unfold where the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT), as an example of emerging markets, stands in informing the public about CBDC. To this end, it conducts an event study on the official X account of CBRT in English over 10.2020-12.2022 by utilizing Nvivo. The findings of the quantitative analysis of the tweets show that CBRT does not regard X as a primary communication channel and mainly shares links to publications from the official websites in X. Also, CBRT tends to adopt a ‘cold-turkey’ informative approach about CBDC with the public rather than ‘gradualism’. Consequently, CBRT should rigorously design a communication strategy that fulfills the needs of the modern economy and start addressing CBDC to raise awareness if a quick transition to digital currency is targeted.Article Çevrim-İçi Matematik Öğretimi Alan Deneyiminde Teori ve Pratik Arasındaki Mesafe Üzerine Bir İnceleme(Mehmet Tekerek, 2025) Ӧlmez, İbrahim; Pekkan, Zelha Tunc; Birgili, Bengi; Taylan, Rukiye DidemGeçmiş çalışmalar, öğretmen adaylarının teori ve pratiği birleştirme becerisinin, derste öğrendiklerinipratiğe dökebilmek için artan öneminden bahsetmektedir. These three types of memories were compared in terms of their memory characteristics such as vividness, emotionality, importance, confidence, and rehearsal frequency. A total of 319 young (18-30 years) and 112 middle-aged (40-65 years) adults completed the online survey. Results showed that earliest memories were rated either similar to or lower than later memories in their memory characteristics. More specifically, they received lower ratings than freereport memories in all memory characteristics whereas they did not significantly differ from recent memories only in importance and emotionality. In addition, free-report memories were highest in emotionality, importance and rehearsal frequency whereas recent memories were highest in vividness and confidence ratings. Compared to young adults, middle-aged adults provided higher ratings for all memory characteristics in general, and they further recalled earliest memories from an older age. Finally, the order of reporting the three types of memories (earliest memory first versus recent memory first) was examined with respect to its potential influence on memory characteristics and dating of the recalled memories. Results displayed no significant effect of the reporting order on memory characteristics. Dating of the earliest and free-report memories, however, was significantly affected by the reporting order. The mean age for earliest memories was higher when it was retrieved following the recent memory compared to the reporting order in which earliest memories are retrieved and reported first. Overall, results indicated that earliest memories are not particularly special compared to later memories (e.g.,free-report memories) in terms of their memory characteristics, and they are vulnerable to experimental manipulation such as changing the reporting order just like other types of autobiographical memories.master's-degree-project.listelement.badge Consumer Loans' First Payment Default (fpd) Detection and Predictive Model(MEF Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2018) Sevgili, Türkan; Koç, UtkuThe project is based on the opinion that whether the loan applications which are profitable could be granted instead of prone the default (FPD) ones by using predictive models in machine learning by the credit decision authorities in banking sector. Default Loan (also called non-performing loan) occurs when there is a failure to meet bank conditions and cannot be repaid in accordance with the terms of the loan which has reached its maturity. This report is a research effort in the analysis of default loan applicants, especially FPD, from a real dataset obtained from a bank. Expectation from the study is that increase the efficiency of consumer loan allocation by providing predictive analysis of the consumer behavior concerning loan’s first payment default. FPD detection analysis is a crucial role for the determination of consumer loans at the application level. The study also provides an understanding on the reasons of non-performing loans and helps to manage credit risks more consciously. The methods proposed in this study can be extended to other individual consumer loans such as car credits and mortgage.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Consumer Loans' First Payment Default Detection: a Predictive Model(TUBITAK SCIENTIFIC & TECHNICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL, 2020) Sevgili, Türkan; Koç, UtkuA default loan (also called nonperforming loan) occurs when there is a failure to meet bank conditions and repayment cannot be made in accordance with the terms of the loan which has reached its maturity. In this study, we provide a predictive analysis of the consumer behavior concerning a loan’s first payment default (FPD) using a real dataset of consumer loans with approximately 600,000 records from a bank. We use logistic regression, naive Bayes, support vector machine, and random forest on oversampled and undersampled data to build eight different models to predict FPD loans. A two-class random forest using undersampling yielded more than 86% on all performance measures: accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The corresponding scores are even as high as 96% for oversampling. However, when tested on the real and balanced dataset, the performance of oversampling deteriorates as generating synthetic data for an extremely imbalanced dataset harms the training procedure of the algorithms. The study also provides an understanding of the reasons for nonperforming loans and helps to manage credit risks more consciously.Article Contribution of Gravity Frames To Seismic Performance of Steel Moment Resisting Frames(2018) Zorlu, Mustafa; Şeker, Onur; Akbaş, Bülent; Shen, JayTraditionally, lateral stiffness and strength of the gravity frames in steel buildings are neglected in structural analysis. During the past earthquakes, such as Northridge, USA, 1994 and Kobe, Japan, 1995, unexpected failures were detected at beam-to-column connections of steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). In the aftermath of these earthquakes, extensive research has been carried out to reveal the causes of these failures. Based on the detailed observations, it is likely that the reserve capacity provided by the gravity frames prevented the highly damaged steel buildings from collapsing, since majority of the moment-resisting connections failed prematurely during the Northridge earthquake (1994). Even though the influence of gravity frames (GFs) on structural behavior can be substantial, little attention is paid to evaluate its impact on structural response. With this paper, the contribution of interior GFs in seismic performance of special moment resisting steel frames (SMRFs) is evaluated. For this purpose, 4- and 9-story SMRFs were designed in accordance with the requirements of Draft Turkish Seismic Code (2016). The frames are, then, subjected to incremental dynamic analysis. To evaluate the contribution of the interior GFs on the overall seismic performance of structural system, inelastic behavior of shear tab (simple) connections at beam-to-gravity-only columns were idealized as semi-rigid joints. A general purpose structural analysis software, ETABS, is utilized for the analyses. The results of the study are presented in terms of story drifts, base shear vs. roof displacement.Article Dağlık Karabağ Sorunu: Ermenistan için Çözümsüz Çatışma Olmasının Nedenleri(Milli Savunma Üniversitesi, 2015) Güleç, CansuThe conflict between Armenian and Azerbaijan around Nagorno-Karabakh was violent between 1988 and 1994. Nevertheless, Nagorno-Karabakh dispute is regarded as one of the frozen conflicts, which has been witnessed for many years. In order to stop and contain the conflict, other states and international organizations advocated peaceful settlement. However, the problem went through a number of phases and has not reached a final solution despite of many years of negotiation under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group. In this context, the objective of this paper is to understand the main impeding factors that prevent peaceful resolution and establishment of a long-lasting peace for Armenia. As a framework to analyze the case of Armenia-Azerbaijan dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh, this paper uses the "constructivist theory", which explains national histories and identities as fluid, evolving, and formed over time, and which claims that it is mainly social relationships between agents, structures, and institutions that can lead to ethnic conflicts. Contrary to the primordialist approach, which treats ethnic groups as concrete and independent entities that exist inherently, the explanation of intractability within a constructivist framework constitutes the main difference. In view of this, government policies are also constructed according to interstate perceptions, expectations and the concepts developed towards themselves and others. As a result, rather than only including one-dimensional "ancient hatred" paradigm; "the problem of security", "image of enemy", "other countries" involvement with having interests in the region", and most importantly "internal politics" can be regarded as the contributors to intractability for Armenia.Article Destination Personalities of Alacati and Ayvalik in Turkey: Consumer Perceptions of a Summer Holiday(2019) Tosun, Petek; Merve AkarIn 2018 summer, Alaçatı and Ayvalık have been listed among the top cities that are preferred as tourism destinations for local tourists. These destinations have been popular for tourists in the last decade and Turkish tourists increasingly prefer local destinations for their summer holidays because of the devalued Turkish lira. Attracting tourists is among the primary goals for tourism marketers, and consequently understanding customer perceptions regarding destinations is one of the key factors to achieve this goal. In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the destination personalities of Ayvalık and Alaçatı and compare them in terms of destination personality dimensions. In a quantitative research design, respondents (n=191) have been asked about their perceptions about the destination personalities of Alaçatı and Ayvalık, in which they compare the two destinations on a 5 Point-Likert scale. Destination personalities have been examined within the conceptual framework of destination personality dimensions, which are, sincerity, excitement, and conviviality. In addition, respondents have answered a question by writing their opinions about “a great summer vacation” with a few words, which have been analyzed by content and cluster analyses, aiming to have a deeper understanding about the consumer perceptions about their summer vacations. Significant differences have been found between the destination personality dimensions of Ayvalık and Alaçatı. Ayvalık is perceived as sincerer and more convivial than Alaçatı, whereas Alaçatı is perceived as more exciting than Ayvalık. Regarding their expectations from their summer holiday, consumers have been grouped into 4 clusters such as; (1) fun, excitement, and activity oriented, (2) travelling and exploring oriented, (3) family and friends oriented, (4) relaxation, comfort, and silence-oriented consumers. There is not a significant difference among clusters regarding the perceived destination personalities of Ayvalık and Alaçatı. This study aims to contribute to researchers not only by implementing destination personality research in the Turkish context, but also by extending the existing knowledge by assessing destination personality concept together with the consumers’ descriptions of an idealized summer vacation. Moreover, findings of the study will be beneficial for marketing activities of tourism agencies, hospitality industry, and local governments.Article Detecting the Effect of Voice-Over in Tv Ads Via Optic Brain Imaging (fnirs) and In-Depth Interview Methods(2016) Çakar, Tuna; Girisken, YenerVoice-overs are used extensively to increase the effectiveness of the TV ads especially in the last decade. The main purpose is to provide the brand message via a clear feature that will inevitably grab the attention of the viewers. The current study contains the neuro tests of 12 TV ads in banking and finance sectors on 168 participants in 8 groups. Optic brain imaging (fNIRS) and in-depth interviews were the methodologies utilized during the test of these TV ads. The obtained results indicate that the use of voice-over during the TV ads possibly causes the decrease in attention and emotional engagement levels of the participants.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Determining and Evaluating New Store Locations Using Remote Sensing and Machine Learning(Tübitak, 2021) Ünsalan, Cem; Turgay, Zeynep Zerrin; Küçükaydın, Hande; Höke, BerkanDecision making for store locations is crucial for retail companies as the profit depends on the location. The key point for correct store location is profit approximation, which is highly dependent on population of the corresponding region, and hence, the volume of the residential area. Thus, estimating building volumes provides insight about the revenue if a new store is about to be opened there. Remote sensing through stereo/tri-stereo satellite images provides wide area coverage as well as adequate resolution for three dimensional reconstruction for volume estimation. We reconstruct 3D map of corresponding region with the help of semiglobal matching and mask R-CNN algorithms for this purpose. Using the existing store data, we construct models for estimating the revenue based on surrounding building volumes. In order to choose the right location, the suitable utility model, which calculates store revenues, shouldbe rigorously determined. Moreover, model parameters should be assessed as correctly as possible. Instead of using randomly generated parameters, we employ remote sensing, computer vision, and machine learning techniques, which provide a novel way for evaluating new store locations.
