18 - Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Biofibers and Their Composites

In this study, the acoustic and mechanical properties of many biofibers and their composites are presented. First, the sound absorption coefficients and transmission losses of commonly used natural fibers and their composites are presented, by clearly reporting the thickness of the samples, for three different frequency ranges (<500 Hz: low, 500–2000 Hz: medium, and >2000 Hz: high). In addition, the sound absorption coefficients (for low- and medium-frequency ranges) and noise reduction coefficients of some 40-cm-thick samples are overlaid in order to directly compare their performances. Second, the physical properties, such as the density, diameter, and length of biofibers, and mechanical properties, such as the damping (or loss factor) and Young’s modulus of biofibers and their composites, are presented in detail. For comparison purposes, the acoustic and mechanical properties of some conventional materials, such as carbon and glass fibers, are included in the tables and figures. Finally, the effects of some parameters, such as pretreatment, fiber diameter, fiber/matrix ratio, moisture content, manufacturing and machining parameters/techniques, and measurement conditions/methods, on the acoustic and mechanical properties of natural materials are presented. Furthermore, current applications and potential usage areas of natural fibers are briefly discussed.

19 - Identification of the Elastic and Damping Properties of Jute and Luffa Fiber-Reinforced Biocomposites

Although there are many studies in the literature on the static mechanical properties of biomaterials such as tensile strength, the dynamic mechanical properties of biomaterials such as modal loss factors have not been investigated in detail. In this study, the Young’s moduli and damping (or loss factors) of some jute and luffa fiber-reinforced biocomposites are investigated. The effects of fiber/resin ratio and thickness on the mechanical properties of the jute and luffa composites are identified via an experimental approach. For this purpose, acoustic and structural frequency response functions of some homogeneous and hybrid jute and luffa composite plates with different fiber/resin ratios and thicknesses are measured. By analyzing the measured frequency response functions using the circle-fit method, the modal frequencies and loss factors of the homogeneous and hybrid composite plates are determined. By assuming that the homogeneous plates are isotropic, the same plates are modeled using the finite element method, and by comparing the experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the elastic properties of the homogeneous plates are determined. In addition, the same homogeneous plates are modeled by considering an anisotropic material model, and the associated material properties are determined. By using the identified material properties, the finite element models of the hybrid composite plates are developed, and by comparing their experimental and theoretical natural frequencies, the identified elastic material properties are evaluated and validated.

Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Luffa Fiber-Reinforced Biocomposites

This chapter presents an overview of acoustic and mechanical behaviors of luffa fiber reinforced biocomposites. A growing number of studies are examining the composites of biodegradable fibers such as flax, hemp, kenaf and luffa due to the adverse effects of chemical materials on nature. The low cost and superior acoustic and acceptable mechanical properties of biocomposites make them very attractive for practical applications such as sound and vibration isolation. However, the acoustic and mechanical characteristics of biocomposites and their dynamic behaviors should be fully determined before considering them for practical applications. In this chapter, acoustic properties, such as sound absorption and transmission loss, and mechanical properties, such as damping and elasticity of luffa fiber reinforced composites, are presented. The variations in acoustic and mechanical properties due to different samples and manufacturing process are explored.

Analysis of Intelligent Software Implementations in Air Cargo Using Fermatean Fuzzy Codas Method

The chapter focuses on the problem of analyzing and selecting intelligent software in Air Cargo in the concept of Aviation 4.0. First, the notions, problems and challenges linked to air cargo are discussed. Recent developments, ongoing innovative projects and unfilled gaps in the area of intelligent air cargo software are presented. Next, the proposed method to analyze a select software to be used by air cargo companies is described. It is a modified version of one of the recent multi-criteria decision-making methods, called CODAS. Its original, crisp version and its existing fuzzy extensions are first presented. Next, an original extension of the method, using Fermatean fuzzy sets, is proposed. In the application section a logistics company is considered, which is facing the problem of selecting software supporting the air cargo process. The criteria are selected by experts holding various positions in the company, and three alternatives of air cargo software provider are determined. Then, the proposed method is applied to solve the intelligent software selection problem. Finally, conclusion and future research perspectives are given.
Architectural Representation as a Body Without Organs

Architectural representation plays a critical role as a creative tool, facilitating dialogue and mediation between designer and design. While traditionally viewed as an objective entity, it holds potential for creative expression. Architectural representation is traditionally associated with objectivity and aesthetic beauty. However, as a design tool, it should also embrace subjectivity. Subjectivity in architectural representation goes beyond the architect’s style or drawings, encompassing the presence of the subject within the representation. At this stage, architectural representation becomes related to bodily experience and every experience has its own deformations. The presence of bodily deformations in architectural representations transforms its rigid body into a body without organs. This “new” body may be defined as “beast” rather than “beauty.” In this chapter, I would like to discuss architectural representation as a body without organs to highlight its emancipatory and participatory characteristics that may trigger creativity within the context of analogue and digital worlds. Bilevel Models on the Competitive Facility Location Problem

Facility location and allocation problems have been a major area of research for decades, which has led to a vast and still growing literature. Although there are many variants of these problems, there exist two common features: finding the best locations for one or more facilities and allocating demand points to these facilities. A considerable number of studies assume a monopolistic viewpoint and formulate a mathematical model to optimize an objective function of a single decision maker. In contrast, competitive facility location (CFL) problem is based on the premise that there exist competition in the market among different firms. When one of the competing firms acts as the leader and the other firm, called the follower, reacts to the decision of the leader, a sequential-entry CFL problem is obtained, which gives rise to a Stackelberg type of game between two players. A successful and widely applied framework to formulate this type of CFL problems is bilevel programming (BP). In this chapter, the literature on BP models for CFL problems is reviewed, existing works are categorized with respect to defined criteria, and information is provided for each work.

Compliance and Reporting Trends: Essential Strategies

The digital age, with decreasing barriers to entry, paving the way for low-cost competition, saw an influx of new financial products and services globally. Soon the increasingly technology-driven financial landscape transformed itself with the democratization of finance diffusing to all levels of society. The standing rules and regulations of financial markets were confronted with an epitome of complexities marked by higher transparency, increased efficiencies, a wide range of substitutes, abundant information, a huge number of stakeholders and a bulk of aspiring entrepreneurs. However, a new game necessitates new rules, and a considerable disruption in old ways of doing is sure to witness unorthodox problems that need to be dealt with, and preferably foreseen, through a different lens. Sooner or later, these new digitally enhanced financial markets are destined to break down, dragging down everyone who once had faith in them, if not supported by proper compliance and corporate social performance and reporting standards. Consumer Neuroscience Perspective for Brands: How Do Brands Influence Our Brains?

Neuroscientific tools have increasingly been used by marketing practitioners and researchers to understand and explain several different questions that have been issued for a specific company or a general understanding. In this respect, the neuroscientific approach has been evaluated as a potential tool for understanding the neural mechanisms directly related to marketing with its contribution to providing novel perspectives. The chapter addresses one of the most relevant subjects, brands, for issuing the strategic role of applied neuroscience in marketing and consumer behavior. The first section of this chapter focuses on a novel definition of brand, and the next section covers the brand image, brand perception, and brand loyalty. The second section summarizes the main findings regarding the neuroscience of brands. In the final section, the findings from a related experiment have been provided for the potential roles of neuromarketing for developing marketing strategies for brands.
Creating Effective Materials for Eap

Materials used in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses should strike a balance between the required linguistic proficiency in receptive and productive language skills and the disciplinary-specific vocabulary, content, and text genres. While published EAP materials provide EAP teachers with a solid structure, a wide range of texts, and a syllabus to rely on, most coursebooks remain inadequate to cater to the needs of learners from different academic disciplines. Therefore, EAP teachers should consider a set of carefully determined criteria before selecting, adapting, and developing pertinent EAP materials for their students and exert effort to familiarize themselves with the disciplinary-specific text genres. This chapter informs the readers about the key principles of selecting, using, and adapting published EAP materials and ways of designing customized EAP materials for specific learning contexts. Practical principles are offered for EAP teachers preparing students, particularly for undergraduate programs. These guiding principles emphasize selecting engaging and relevant authentic texts and designing purposeful activities that integrate technology in material development. They also focus on teaching discipline-specific academic writing conventions and text genres through genre pedagogy in EAP courses, aiming to enhance students' academic literacy and critical thinking skills. © The Author(s). Decoding Adolescents Internet Addiction, Academic Achievement, and Empathy Levels: Untangling Complex Associations

This study explores the relationships between internet addiction, academic achievement, and empathy levels among 179 eighth- grade students. Using regression analyses, the research investigates how internet addiction impacts academic performance and empathy, and whether gender plays a role in internet addiction. Results indicate no statistically significant correlation between internet addiction and either academic achievement or empathy levels. However, a moderate positive correlation is found between empathy and academic performance. These findings suggest that internet addiction may not be a strong predictor of academic or empathic outcomes in adolescents. The study underscores the importance of promoting empathy to enhance academic success and highlights the need for balanced internet use. Future research should consider longitudinal designs and diverse samples to further explore these complex relationships. Implications for educational practices include integrating social- emotional learning programs to foster empathy and support students’ overall well- being. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
Design-Build Build/Design: an Inquiry-Based Approach To Teaching Beginning Design Students

This chapter describes an alternate design studio approach that eschews the concept first pedagogy universally adopted in design studio education, avoiding the resulting trap of the seemingly endless formal manipulations that all too often displace the more inclusive material and technical development of a design. The introduction of "design-build" studios and programs into the academic architectural curricula of many schools worldwide reflects recognition of the unhealthy and artificial separation made between design studio culture and the content of technical courses and constitutes an important way of bridging this self-imposed gap. Preserving the simultaneity of concerns and relationships during the design process, although difficult, is rather crucial to an "inquiry-based" approach to learning. When beginning design students start a project without a particular building system in mind, they tend to flounder with respect to design decisions about the tectonic constraints and technical/constructional possibilities of their designs. © 2019 Taylor and Francis.

Discourse of Reflections on Instant Joint Engagement in Online Elt Graduate Courses (chapter 17)

In this chapter, we investigate the discourse of post-course reflections by in-service teachers on instant joint engagement in online ELT graduate courses. Our findings demonstrate that engagement for teacher reflection might be promoted in synchronous interactions during online teacher education courses. We argue that in-service teachers’ cognitive, socio-constructive, affective and interactive engagement can foster their critically reflective voice.

Effects of Machining on the Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Jute and Luffa Biocomposites

After their production, biocomposite structures do not always have the final shape or dimensions required for their purpose, hence, they need machining. However, the effects of machining on the acoustic and mechanical properties of many biocomposites are still not well known. The effects of machining on the acoustic and mechanical properties of jute and luffa biocomposites are revealed in this chapter. To do this, the sound absorption coefficients (or SACs) and transmission losses (or TLs) of jute and epoxy and luffa and epoxy composite samples, with and without a turning process, are determined using the impedance tube method. The loss factors and Young’s moduli of the jute and epoxy and luffa and epoxy composite samples, with and without a milling process, are identified using experimental and theoretical modal analyses. The results show that, when the samples are machined, the sound absorption coefficients reduce by 3%-7%, the transmission loss levels increase by 6-11dB, and the damping levels and Young’s moduli reduce by 0.1%-0.5% and 3%-4%, respectively. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Emerging Trends in the Post-Regulatory Environment: the Importance of Instilling Trust

The financial services industry is one of the most critical pillars of economic growth and sustainable development in any country. As such, the findings of the 2016 Edelman Trust Barometer, that measures trust in institutions with more than 33,000 respondents in 28 countries over the last 15 years, are highly alarming. Accordingly, the financial services industry is ranked among the lowest with a mere 51 % on a global basis. Despite this darkened outlook, areas exist that seem to be promising: Sustainability management, responsible innovation and the organized and systemic efforts to increase transparency, comparability, accountability and reliability. Although the recent crises in financial markets have led regulators to come to a general agreement that a mutual effort is needed to develop procedures for increased compliance standards, and increase the pace of harmonization in accounting and financial reporting standards, the industry is faced with an imminent challenge: The low levels of trust in financial services. In this chapter, the author discusses how to re-build trust and reputation of the industry.
Enhanced Knowledge Transfer in Historical Site Interpretation: A Gamified Approach for Yedikule Fortress/Türkiye

This study explores the integration of wearable and portable devices in enhancing the interpretation and communication of Yedikule Fortress, a 1600-year-old historical site on the outskirts of the Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula. This interpretation involves users taking of the site tour with augmented reality/mixed reality-enhanced using audio accompaniment and gamification. The designed route provides tailored information, enhanced by a digital layer and a storyline. This study examines the quality of the information, visitor route design, and the integration of game elements. The multi-modal guidance system fosters interaction between historical narratives and spatial context, with participants reporting increased interest and improved recall of historical details. Building on the refinement of the process through expert input and participant feedback, this study also highlights limitations related to device affordances that influenced user behavior and interaction. Future research should explore the adaptability of this framework to other heritage sites, ensuring its educational and experiential relevance. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
Exploring Elderly Customer-Employee Rapport in Services: Managerial and Social Implications

The increasing share of older people in the population has influenced the economic and social life andservices sectors. Banking services are integrated into almost all of the daily transactions and inevitablefor older consumers. This study aims to examine the special needs and expectations of older customers in retail banking. A survey was conducted on frontline salespeople in branches. The findings haveshown that older consumers expect special attention from their customer relationship managers. Therelationship managers have positive attitudes toward older consumers and high customer-employeerapport levels. Attitude and rapport constructs are positively and significantly correlated. In addition,relationship managers were divided into three clusters depending on their rapport levels and perceivedbranch visit reasons. This chapter has provided current empirical findings, insights, and managerialrecommendations about customer-employee relationships in the older consumers and services contexts.
