Book Part A Strategic Management Approach To Financial Management Practices in Small and Medium Sized Businesses(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2015) Karadağ, Hande...Book Part Citation - WoS: 27Citation - Scopus: 33Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Luffa Fiber-Reinforced Biocomposites(Elsevier, 2019) Genç, Garip; Körük, HasanThis chapter presents an overview of acoustic and mechanical behaviors of luffa fiber reinforced biocomposites. A growing number of studies are examining the composites of biodegradable fibers such as flax, hemp, kenaf and luffa due to the adverse effects of chemical materials on nature. The low cost and superior acoustic and acceptable mechanical properties of biocomposites make them very attractive for practical applications such as sound and vibration isolation. However, the acoustic and mechanical characteristics of biocomposites and their dynamic behaviors should be fully determined before considering them for practical applications. In this chapter, acoustic properties, such as sound absorption and transmission loss, and mechanical properties, such as damping and elasticity of luffa fiber reinforced composites, are presented. The variations in acoustic and mechanical properties due to different samples and manufacturing process are explored.Book Part An Outlook of Small and Medium Sized Enterprise (sme) Sector(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2015) Karadağ, Hande...Book Part Citation - WoS: 3Artifcial Intelligence in Architectural Heritage Research Simulating Networks of Caravanserais Through Machine Learning(Routledge, 2021) Varinlioglu, Guzden; Balaban, Ozgun[No Abstract Available]Book Part Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 12Bilevel Models on the Competitive Facility Location Problem(Springer, 2017) Küçükaydın, Hande; Aras, NecatiFacility location and allocation problems have been a major area of research for decades, which has led to a vast and still growing literature. Although there are many variants of these problems, there exist two common features: finding the best locations for one or more facilities and allocating demand points to these facilities. A considerable number of studies assume a monopolistic viewpoint and formulate a mathematical model to optimize an objective function of a single decision maker. In contrast, competitive facility location (CFL) problem is based on the premise that there exist competition in the market among different firms. When one of the competing firms acts as the leader and the other firm, called the follower, reacts to the decision of the leader, a sequential-entry CFL problem is obtained, which gives rise to a Stackelberg type of game between two players. A successful and widely applied framework to formulate this type of CFL problems is bilevel programming (BP). In this chapter, the literature on BP models for CFL problems is reviewed, existing works are categorized with respect to defined criteria, and information is provided for each work.Book Part Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Compliance and Reporting Trends: Essential Strategies(Springer, 2017) Son-Turan, SemenThe digital age, with decreasing barriers to entry, paving the way for low-cost competition, saw an influx of new financial products and services globally. Soon the increasingly technology-driven financial landscape transformed itself with the democratization of finance diffusing to all levels of society. The standing rules and regulations of financial markets were confronted with an epitome of complexities marked by higher transparency, increased efficiencies, a wide range of substitutes, abundant information, a huge number of stakeholders and a bulk of aspiring entrepreneurs. However, a new game necessitates new rules, and a considerable disruption in old ways of doing is sure to witness unorthodox problems that need to be dealt with, and preferably foreseen, through a different lens. Sooner or later, these new digitally enhanced financial markets are destined to break down, dragging down everyone who once had faith in them, if not supported by proper compliance and corporate social performance and reporting standards. This chapter explores newly emerging trends in compliance and reporting standards for financial institutions.Book Part Creating the Flipped Educators of the Future: Leading by Example in the Faculty of Education(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, Muhammed…Book Part Cultural Aspects Inherent in Flipped Learning(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, Muhammed…Book Part Differentiating Flipped Learning Approaches for the Diverse Needs of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, Muhammed…Book Part Disaster Life Cycle in Turkey: Planning, Policy and Regulation Changes Chapter 14(2016) Ural, Derin Nur...Book Part Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Emerging Trends in the Post-Regulatory Environment: the Importance of Instilling Trust(Springer International Publishing, 2017) Son-Turan, SemenThe financial services industry is one of the most critical pillars of economic growth and sustainable development in any country. As such, the findings of the 2016 Edelman Trust Barometer, that measures trust in institutions with more than 33,000 respondents in 28 countries over the last 15 years, are highly alarming. Accordingly, the financial services industry is ranked among the lowest with a mere 51 % on a global basis. Despite this darkened outlook, areas exist that seem to be promising: Sustainability management, responsible innovation and the organized and systemic efforts to increase transparency, comparability, accountability and reliability. Although the recent crises in financial markets have led regulators to come to a general agreement that a mutual effort is needed to develop procedures for increased compliance standards, and increase the pace of harmonization in accounting and financial reporting standards, the industry is faced with an imminent challenge: The low levels of trust in financial services. In this chapter, the author discusses how to re-build trust and reputation of the industry.Book Part Engaging Students in a Flipped Language Learning Environment: Stories From the English Language Preparatory Program(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, Muhammed…Book Part Exploring Environmental Justice: Meaningful Participation and Turkey’s Small-Scale Hydroelectricity Power Plants Practices(Springer, 2021) Kibaroğlu, Ayşegül; Sayan, CanerThis chapter explores the emerging concept of meaningful participation within the framework of environmental justice, with specific reference to Turkey’s recent experience of building several small-scale hydroelectricity power plants (HEPP). The paper scrutinizes the HEPP process, including its entrenched legal framework, and attempts to come up with suggestions to elaborate further on the concept of meaningful participation.Book Part Fading Boundaries: Insights on Learning "in Between" the Classroom Spaces(Springer international Publishing Ag, 2021) Soygeniş, Sema Esen; Baloglu, Yasemin Burcu; Baloğlu, Yasemin Burcu; Soygenis, Sema EsenAlong with the advancements in technology and shifts in approaches to education in our day, school architecture began to undergo significant transformations. Learning beyond the classrooms has emerged as a highlighted concern as well as the children's interaction with each other and their environment. Articulation of the changing pedagogical approaches and visions of the innovative, student-centered ideas of the twenty-first century through the physical characters of learning spaces has become a significant issue for research regarding the design of contemporary schools. The evolution of the formation of boundaries, borders, and thresholds defining the distinctions and establishing the relationships and hierarchies between the learning spaces at school settings constitutes a critical part of this process, which deserves attention. This chapter aims to search for boundary-related design suggestions for primary schools in Turkey, based on the data obtained through a field study conducted in Istanbul, which aimed to derive the current issues regarding the spatial use patterns in prototype-based, conventionally designed schools. It is believed that the effective inhabitation of spaces beyond the classrooms has a high potential to contribute to the realization of diverse educational activities and the introduction of more permeable physical and visual boundaries can support the enrichment of school environments.Book Part Fipped Learning Through the Eyes of the Students: Tales and Anecdotes(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, Muhammed…Book Part Flipped Leadership: Transparency, Vision, Accountability, and Resources(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Kurban, Caroline Fell; Şahin, MuhammedAs a founding rector of a new institution establishing itself as a fully Flipped university, both the university and I found ourselves in a unique position. Instead of a challenging, change-management process whereby buy in was needed from each stakeholder, all the staff, instructors, and students that started at MEF had come knowing that the education would be Flipped and had agreed to be a part of this approach. From a leadership point of view, this was indeed a privileged position to be in. However, it does not mean that there were not some teething problems along the way. Three main issues arose during the first year including; instructors’ expectations and the clarity of the MEF vision; issues related to the physical infrastructure; as well as questions about assessment.Book Part Flipped Learning in Legal Education: a Personal Experience(Emerald Group Publishing, 2016) Karacaoğlu, EmineThere are always discussion on how legal education are to be taught interactively and effectively.
